For FR models look suitably sporty and come with plenty of standard equipment. The 2.0-litre diesel engine has 181bhp and a whopping 280lb ft of torque, so it feels genuinely rapid. It’s pretty refined once you’re up to cruising speeds, too.

Against There is a trade-off in ride quality, particularly if you go for the optional 18-inch wheels. Despite the FR’s sporting intent, the steering doesn’t offer much feedback. The diesel engine can be pretty vocal if you rev it hard, too.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Seat Leon is one of the best family cars. It feels more polished than the likes of the Kia Cee’d (both in the cabin and on the road), yet its pricing makes it look considerably more affordable than a VW Golf.

Our favourite version is the 1.4 FR ACT. This combines a 148bhp turbo petrol engine with a sporty suspension set-up to give strong performance and agile handling.

The 1.2-litre petrol model is also worth a look if you want to keep things cheap. Stick with entry-level S trim and you’ll get all the basics and surprisingly punchy performance for a reasonable price.

If you need a diesel, the Ecomotive is worth the extra over the standard 1.6 TDI; its six-speed manual gearbox and extra power make it a bit more relaxing to drive. The 2.0-litre versions are unsurprisingly stronger, but they’re noisier and quite a bit more expensive to buy.
