We think the Suzuki SX4 makes the most sense as a small, cheap off-roader rather than a not-particularly-convincing supermini. Two-wheel-drive versions will struggle against the likes of a Ford Fiesta or VW Polo. The SX4, however, is surprisingly good off-road and there's not much out there that can offer four-wheel-drive at a similar price.
If you do opt for a four-wheel-drive model, you are limited to either the top-spec 1.6-litre petrol version or the 2.0-litre diesel and which one you choose will be down to whether or not you need the diesel's extra pull at low revs or plan to run up a lot of miles. If the answer is no, then the petrol should suit your needs.
