For Offers loads of equipment, a large boot and tidy handling. Four-wheel drive will help in slippery conditions.

Against The standard panoramic sunroof limits headroom. You need to rev the petrol engine hard to make brisk progress and the cabin plastics look cheap. It costs a lot more than the two-wheel-drive version.

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross 1.6 SZ5 Allgrip has lots of desirable kit and four-wheel drive, but the sunroof eats into rear headroom too much. We also prefer the diesel engine for its superior low-rev shove.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is a convincing family car that should definitely be on your shortlist if you want a practical car that’s cheap to run. You won’t get much of a discount, but the S-Cross’s comparatively low prices mean it’s good value for money.

Two engines are available, a petrol and a diesel, both producing 118bhp. The two-wheel-drive 1.6-litre petrol models are cheapest, but we’d recommend going for the 1.6 diesel for its lower CO2 emissions and superior low-rev shove.

Even entry-level SZ3 trim is well equipped, getting 16-inch alloys, air-conditioning, cruise control, front and rear electric windows, heated door mirrors and a USB socket. We’d go for SZ4, though, because this adds climate control, Bluetooth, keyless entry, 17-inch alloys and extra body protection, yet is still competitively priced.
