For The Toyota GT86 is great fun to drive thanks to its sharp handling and crisp responses. It’s affordable to buy and very well equipped.

Against You need to really thrash the engine for the sort of pace you expect, and the interior quality could be better. Not as practical as the best coupes, either.

A great little sports car that’s good value for money. If you plan to do the odd track day with your coupe, the Toyota GT86 should definitely be on your shortlist.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

Buying a GT86 is a simple process - there’s only one version. All have the same rev-hungry petrol engine, and there’s only one trim level that provides all the kit you need. Alloys, climate control, keyless entry, cruise control, electric front windows, a Bluetooth phone connection, seven airbags and stability control are all included.

There aren’t even that many optional extras to choose from. Sat-nav is available for a reasonable price, but the leather trim option looks pricier.

No, the only real choice you’ve got to make is whether to stick with the notchy six-speed manual gearbox, or specify the six-speed automatic gearbox. We haven’t driven the auto’, but Toyota claims it has the fastest automatic shifts of any torque converter ‘box in the world.

Ownership should be a pretty pain-free affair, too. It’ll cost you a shade more to run than competitors from Audi and Peugeot, but you’ll get Toyota’s fantastic five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
