For The Urban Cruiser is practical and comes with lots of luxury and safety kit. The petrol engine is flexible and, thanks to an engine stop-start system, frugal.

Against The ride is firm and the cabin is dour, but the biggest problem is that the Urban Cruiser is expensive for a car of its size.

We prefer this version of the Urban Cruiser to the more expensive four-wheel-drive diesel model, but it's still not special enough to justify its high price.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

Deciding which of Toyota's Urban Cruisers to go for is a simple choice between a petrol or diesel engine, because there's just one highly-specced trim.

Toyota expects the majority of buyers will go for the petrol version and that's what we'd recommend, too. Unless you really need four-wheel drive, the petrol's lower cost makes much more sense.

If you simply need a small four-wheel drive car, the diesel will do the job, but there are many cheaper options around.

Whichever version you choose, it's hard to conclude that you're getting great value for money. Yes, the Urban Cruiser is well equipped, but for the same kind of money you can buy much bigger, more practical and more powerful alternatives.
