    My car

This is the best car I have ever driven. Absolutely fantastic on the road with great control and impressive acceleration. This car has saved me from dangerous moments several times with its fantastic brakes.

The interior is magnificent - like in a really classy sports car!

Overall, I would recommend this car to anyone who loves enjoyment of sport driving.

    My car

The Alfa Romero 1.8 TS Veloce is a stunning car, and extremely nice to drive. The engine is beautiful and revs freely and provides smooth powerful acceleration.

However the car is let down by the number of very expensive faults, the car has only done 49,000 miles and I've had to replace the cataltic converters which snapped clean off the engine, and also the gearbox, totalling a £1000 repair bill, the engine under tray constantly hits the ground, as it is hanging off the car (as on most 156s).

    My car

I collected this car new in May 01 and covered 71,000 miles in the beauty.

Other than two bulbs going in almost four years and the fuse box cover dropping, the car has only required normal servicing. I am mystified by the unreliability claims given to Alfa, putting it down to problems with the Selespeed.

It rides and handles well and just loves to be revved hard. There's no doubt that the style and looks of this car are the main attraction. However, for the money, there is very little trade off for the pleasure of driving the most beautiful family/exec saloon ever made.

The fact that the Alfa is mostly compared with BMW 3, Audi A4 and Merc, which all cost considerably more for similar spec, is testament to the all-round quality and driving experience of the 156.

I'm replacing the petrol for diesel and have test-driven BMW 320d, Audi 1.9td and Honda i-CDTi (which has an amazingly smooth and refined engine) in the past couple of weeks.

Today, I tried the 150bhp Multivalve in the 156 Veloce, there is just no significant advantage in performance or driving experience to justify giving up Alfa's style and great engines. I went straight back to the showrom and ordered the Veloce 1.9 JTD.

    My car

I had this car on hire for a week. I did 600 miles in it, and I haven't driven a car that is so tiring in years. The car had 3400 miles on it when I got it.

It looks good both inside and out, but that is where it stops. It is cramped on the inside, there are no cupholders (I had to place my milkshake on the passenger seat!)

I was a bit worried when I noticed the 1.6 on the boot, but it was actually a pleasant surprise. Yes, the engine runs out of breath and is doing mega-revs at motorway cruising speed, also it takes a longish time to overtake, but it is quite punchy and not too bad to run.

But what is just not good enough is the way the car handles. It is choppy, bouncy and tiring. You feel absolutely every imperfection in the road and the steering wheel seems to amplify everything. I have never driven a car with such bad handling. My Nissan Patrol GR had better handling and roadhandling than this thing. It's a typical case of firmness being confused with sportiness. I've got a 16-year-old BMW 7 series that drives better than that.

I don't recommend you buy this car ever.
