This is my second Alfa Romeo 156. My first one (2.0 TS) was an absolute dog in terms of reliability. When it worked well though I loved it, enough to make me buy another! The 2.4 20v JTD so far is being an absolute joy. The performance blows me away everytime I drive it. In gear acceleration is fantastic and the economy (44mpg combined) is pretty impressive too. I've been called a fool for buying another Alfa but the competition left me cold. This car has soul and puts a smile on my face.
My second 2.0TS 156 Alfa by choice. Family practicalities dictated an estate this time and Alfa and in particular the sportwagon delivered fantastic value for money and a superb drive. You can't get away from the fact that Alfa's are 'quirky' and need looking after and to do this you need a specialist and not a main dealer! Alfas do have a huge following and specialists are easy to find. WATCH OUT FOR CAMBELTS - those in the know reccomend changing at 36kmiles and at a specialist this should cost no more than £250. Overall a great enthusiasts car, comparable to a large hatch rather than an estate and huge VFM. Log on to the alfaowner website for tips once you have bought.
The Alfa looks beautiful from every angle, inside and out.
Its 2.4 M Jet turbo engine produces massive torque, and enables superb accelletation acceleration on the road. The driving position is comfortable and natural so you can cover long distances comfortably and without fatigue.
The sportwagon is not practical like more staid estate cars, but you do not buy it to lug loads. Similarly, build qualiy is not as good as german rivals, though not unacceptably bad. Depreciation is also heavy. But who buys a a car for its resiual value other than an accountant or a taxi driver? Buy one to drive. Drive it spiritedly, and the car will do the rest!
I have the 156 sportwagon 2.4 jtd 20valve distinctive. Overall, I'm very pleased with the car, but it uses much more fuel than my previous Audi 2.5 TDi Avant.
I welcome any comments on other owners of this same vehicle.
