I bought this 54 plate 130ps diesel 1.9td sport in april last year. It had covered 23000 miles. Its now done 54000 miles and is running perfectly. The variable service intervals worry me a bit so I drop the oil every 15000 miles and use the proper audi long life oil too. Give the car a couple of days and it recalculates the interval for the next service. The interior is quiet, well appointed but the stereo has a paint that seems to rub off the buttons. Annoying. The engine is responsive and bulletproof if you look after it. The ride is very harsh (as all audis seem to be), but I actually like that, makes it feel like a go-cart. As for general driving. If you put your foot down the understeer is phenomenal. I've never been in a car that understeers so much, Its mental. Seeing as audi promote their road handling. My sister has a a3 quattro diesel and the handling on that is spot on. Its just the 2 wheel drive ones that suffer it seems.
Beware these cars suffer from oil pump failure i had mine 8 days and it failed it was just on 3 years old and had covered 94000 but had full history the repair cost 1500 pounds and Audi offered a goodwill payment of 100 towards the repair. After further investigation this is not a rare occurance i rang garages and they are well aware of this problem it should be a recall but Audi state they are not aware of the problem so be carefull as this is not a serviceable part and you will be liable
The interior build quality of this car is fantastic! It beats the hell out of the 02 tdi passat I had the misfortune to own. The passat in general was rubbish. Engine fantastic but that was all that was good about the passat. The Audi is a little harsh over rougher Irish back roads, but not too bad. I bought the car with 100k miles on the clock as an English Import. It did have the auto box E.C.U and hydraulic unit replaced. But that was common on multitronic auto's up to 2005, so beware if you have the older autos. They really are fantastic automatic gearboxes to drive though. They must have the oil changed every 40k miles. I was lucky to escape the repair costs. Now have 121k miles and the air con compressor is making rattling noises and has to be replaced, but to be fair, with 121k miles something will need to be replaced. Economy good with light foot will see 51mpg. 75mph mototay cruise 45-47mpg. On cold mornings economy drops because of the additional heater every tdi audi has. It's an electric heater that comes on at 5 deg or less. Otherwise tdi's take ages to warm up. Pressing the ecom button will increase economy at the expense of alot longer warm up times. Anyway it's a fantastic car that's a great 2nd hand buy with alot of miles on the clock. Hope the new B8 A4's are just as good!
This is now the fourth audi I have owned (NOT COMPANY CARS) I regretfully bought a Peugeot 307 SW, when moving to France, what a big mistake. I have never had so many problems with a car in all my life! Anyway I have now done 70K in my A4 1.9 TDI with no problems at all. I have averaged 5.6 liters per 100km (according to the in car comp.) which is fantastic. I'm not heavy footed but when you need it there is ample power. Ther is also enough space for 4 adults and room for all the suitcases. The only problem I have is the stupid intruding arm rest that when folded down gives hassels to pull the hadbrake on. I have never got used to this. I am waiting for the new A4 3 ltr TDI QUATRO, Multitronic to come out, which should be fantastic.(It also has an electronic hand break that engages and disengages automaticaly!) For the moment it is only availabe on the old 2.7 ltr TDI motor. I've owned a 3 series 5 years ago and was not as reliable as this. I had problems with cruise controll and the switches on the windows and exterior mirrors which were expensive to repair/replace. Hope the new A4 is even better than the present one. They certainly look very nice, especialy the A5 with smart LED's!
