It is a great car - driving is serene and it performs well, albeit a little flat higher in the rev range.
On a run, it is fantastic, comfortable, and very frugal - until you go over 3000 revs, and then it tends to guzzle the diesel a little bit.
It's a grown up's Golf GTi, and no better a companion to grow old with.
BUT - if you like to fix things yourself, forget it. Changing headlight bulbs or trying to give it that extra TLC through changing oil more frequently than the computer lets you is not happening.
Audi have worked it out - dealer required! To be honest it's not a bad thing, because in the long run, keeping dealer maintenance is probably a lot cheaper than trying to use odd Bob's local garage.
You do need to do the mileage to exploit its value but, without doubt, the build quality leaves nothing to be desired.
Oh yes, and the boot is massive compared to what you'd expect from the outside.
When I got a new job and needed to travel 400 miles per week I thought I would have to compromise on performance and go for a sluggish diesel...
With 180 horses and near on 300lbs of torque the "new" generation of diesel engine has given me as much driving pleasure as my first car a MK2 16v Golf.
The turbo kicks in at 1900 rpm and pulls hard until the red line - in any gear... joining motorways is a breeze. In 5th gear you can go from 30mph to 100 plus with ease. At 70mph in 6th the rev counter sits at 2000rpm and returns a comfortable 40mpg.
I decided on the A4 as opposed to the 3-series as the Audi had a six speed box, was built like an outside toilet and most of all, on 17" star alloy wheels - I loved the look.
I have had no problems to date with my (02) A4 and have racked up 56,000 miles. With a Quattro drivetrain there have been additional servicing costs, but nothing to break the bank.
The varaible servicing I like - especially when ever you look at it, it tells you it will not need servicing for another year!
My only gripe is the lack of folding rear seats (saloon) which compromises the load carrying ability - but this is an optional extra available...
With the new A4 due in Jan '05, the current A4 will be a good 2nd hand buy.
I have an 04 plate Audi with a 1.9TDi (130) SE engine. Although the engine is slightly louder than others, I am very impressed with the car on a whole.
I average over 2500 miles per week, and I get out of the car feeling as refreshed as when I stepped in.
The comfort, looks and interior design all mount up to an excellent car.
Even at high speeds, the fuel economy is good.
A VERY VERY VERY GOOD CAR!!
I have owned the car for nearly 3 years and my mileage is 70,000.
The car is very well made. I think the interior is as good as any car in terms of looks and build quality.
The performance is OK for a 1.9-litre diesel and is economical. I get about 650 miles between fill-ups. Servicing costs have been high - I would strongly recommend shopping around amongst Audi dealers when the vehicle is under warranty and then going elsewhere.
Overall, ownership has been a pleasant experience.

I've had 6 VWs now including this one and it is a mixed bag. In no particular order the economy is poor despite the FSI badging and in town never…
Why is there so much whining about the rear sets? It's small - it's called a "mini" (hint). It didn't get any smaller after you bought it, so deal…
