I have had the TT for eight months and spent over £2500 on repairs and investigation work. I have the 225bhp version, and it has the worst wet-handling characteristics ever, with major understeer on low-speed roundabouts in the rain - where the heck is the four-wheel drive?
I have had the suspension checked and set to factory specification and a new set of Good Year tyres, but there's still no improvment. A coil spring snapped last week, too! I don't trust the handling to push it too much. It's too slow away from the lights - that's when you can see the lights, because the screen is so low - get ready for some serious neck straining.
This car is a major let down. It looks fantastic, but is let down by electrical faults with the ABS and EPS. I don't know where everyone else gets their 35mpg from - I get 30mpg maximum cruising down the M4 at 70mph. My advice - admire its looks from the inside of another car, I am going back to Porsche.
I had this car for around 18 months. I looked at the RX-8 (too peaky, too thirsty, not as classy inside), and the 350Z (I don't have a chest wig and the interior looks like it cost £2.58 to make), but the TT was is a class of its own.
Its handling was great - there was a bit too much understeer, but that's better than arriving in a hedge backwards as per my previous BMW 330i.
The interior (and let's face it, that's what you spend a lot of time looking at!) is in my opinion the most classy in any car I've been in.
Performance is great - it's as fast as you can go in the real world and the Quattro 4x4 system gives loads of confidence in the wet, or on unknown roads, and pulling away from junctions.
My car did 22,000 miles before it needed a service - the price wasn't bad for a prestige car and the length between services was good.
My only gripe would be the rock-hard ride (18-inch alloys don't help), which is not so bad for the driver but I'm not sure my wife was as keen! Oh, and you have to get used to the 'world in widescreen' view from the driver's seat! Sit in one and you'll know what I mean!
All in all, it's a great car and I only sold it because a change of job meant I needed to do many motorway miles and have a car with a bigger boot.
I've owned a 3.2-litre manual TT from new for about nine months now, and I've started to research my next car.
I'm disappointed. The TT is heavy rather than nippy, has a very bumpy ride quality and stiff steering - it just doesn't have that extra something that I wanted for a £25,000 sports car.
With regard to the grip, well, I'm still waiting for snow but until then it seems to handle much the same as anything I've owned before. Well, almost - my old BMW 325 let me down in an icy traffic jam, once but that offered a much more satisfying drive overall, and even an A4 I borrowed seemed more responsive and smooth behind the wheel.
The only saving grace is the Bluetooth phone system, but I suppose I could get that for any car. Maybe this car is better for driving at the upper end of its limits, but I don't have roads like that where I live.
