After 1 year with our 118d SE thought it was time to give a longer term review. After over a year of ownership the cae has never missed a beat. The quality of the latest facelift model is beyond reproach yes some harder plastics but they don't rattle or squeak. MPG has improved and on a trip to France with a mixture of driving managed 54mpg Motorway driving can see 60+Mpg. The ride though firm is still compliant, easily fit a pram and all the stuff that goes with a baby into the car along with another child. Engine is flexiable and spirited and the handling is top of the class for a hatchback.
Looks are subjective but next to a Golf which looks bloated the 1 Series looks Athletic. My only quibble would be the high 5th and 6th Gear which does blunt performance and means a need to drop down a gear to overtake at times helps economy though. Engine is the most rev willing diesel I have ever driven is almost petrol like and silky smooth. Would seriously look at another 1 Series and if they improve the ride further and add some extra space in the rear BMW will head to top of the class!!!
Got this company car in September 2008 and it's just brilliant! Sopers of Lincoln couldn't be more helpful and it arrived in the back of a lorry dead on time on the day agreed. Car runs fantastic, bit of a hard suspension compared to previous car (VW Passat) but not a problem. Economy is amazing and has averaged 60mpg a couple of times, never below 50 even with my congested A14 commute each day. Unbelievable from a 140bhp 2.0 turbo diesel. The tax liability is making my fellow company car drivers jealous; especially those who went for the A3! Cabin room a bit tight but not a problem. Thinking of buying one? Get one!
This car is a fantastic drive for such a low emission vehicle. The car pulls very well & overtakes smoothly on all roads. Kit is excellent & it feels so good.
The boot is better than you rate as I had two adults & two young children (with car seats) comfortably in the car & a whole week's shopping in the boot with a pushchair with space too spare!
I have had this 07 car for about six months now and generally love it. I always look forward to getting behind the wheel as it is so much fun to drive. Most people comment on how comfortable it is on a long trip. Motorway driving is great - country road (or BMW road), driving is even better - you won't want to stop! My only gripe would be build quality in the cabin - it rattles a bit despite the attention of the BMW dealers; I don't find this a major problem though. Oh, and then there are the dealers - you may have to travel to find a good one (who don't think you're made of money!) I get a combined figure of 29.7mpg which I think is very good for a three litre engine that flies! Servicing intervals are impressive and costs are probably no more than average.
