until recently I owned a 318 m sport (59) Not worth all the so called prestiege in my view, it dropped like a stone in value after 10 months, and the motoring costs were ridiculous !!! Had to go to the dealer to avoid losing the warranty etc... and I was nt prepared to risk having issues. Servicing intervals were useless every 13k miles something needed repalcing and the bill always seemed to be £400, or £500 ....tyres £600.00 ! for 4 and that was cheap, in my view it's the same as razor blade companies get the razor and then pay crazy prices for the blades, never again for me german cars, I thought I would miss my beamer but I don;t and I certainly don't miss the expense.
Bought a september 2007 car from a BMW dealer in Jan 08. 5000 miles on the clock, ex demo. An absolutely amazing car to drive, pure fun. sticks to the road. Superb from that point of view
Those however were my single days. now married with kids and it certainly isn't a family car, only a drivers car. No boot room, or room for back seat passengers, even kids.
Running costs: run flat tyre's are expensive, as well as servicing.
The biggest problem though is reliability. i've serviced the car regularly in bmw garages, only 66000 miles on the clock and a fortnight ago the turbo went. went suddenly when driving and burnt all the oil out of the engine. now having the engine striped to see if that can be repaired. very costly, and out of warranty. Also two years ago, some ELA?? unit went (controls abs and electronic brake force distribution ect.), that was under warranty though....
I've heard since that these are very common problems
My advice; avoid outside warranty, or it will cost you big
I've taken this car out with Streetcar many times and I'm glad I got the chance to drive it. I came to the conclusion that it's too small for me, I am over 6 feet tall and adjusting the seat so it was comfortable for me was next to impossible. When I did so, I couldn't see the dash and speedometer because the steering wheel would be in the way and, there would be no space for a person in the back seat.
That doesn't mean it's not comfortable to drive. One of my favourite experiences ever, in fact! The response is fantastic, it's quick and agile. The build quality is excellent as I would expect from BMW, only the engine itself is the noisest thing in the cabin, but that's quite pleasant to hear.
There are downsides though. It sits so low, people have a knack for driving it fast in to traffic calming bumps and as thus, the entire lower part of the front bumper will be scratched and damaged if you're not careful. It feels very small in general, anyway. So it's best for no more than three people in the car.
Overall, this is a fun to drive, modest and practical compact executive saloon, worth considering if the 5 series is either too large for you, or over budget.
I have just come from an A4 Sline. The BMW is probably the wost car I have ever owned. It looks very pretty but thats where it stops. I have the 318d sport plus (replacement of the Msport). As a high milage driver BMW dont give the tools that we need to do the journey. Bluetooth phone prep, this doesnt pickup missed, dialled, recieved calls, it displays all information on a tiny screen on the radio. It is easier to pickup the phone and dial the number, defeating the object of it. There is no autoheadlights, no autowindscreen wipers, no boot open (from inside the car). the start/stop button doesnt work without inserting the key, pointless having it! boot doesnt fit a standard buggy in, no split rear seats, so I can either take my son out or his buggy! no Xenon lights, so night driving is poor. I have been driving the car at 70mph on the motorway without ranting it, and dont get above 45mpg (apparently it goes up to 70mpg?????). All of these things should be part of the heafty 30K price tag! Audi A4 comes with it all for less money!!! When spec'ing out a BMW perhaps the idiots who choose what should be in there as standard may want to do some miles in the car first and not just pick off a list. Leather seats really dont need to be standard over the more basic tools.... I am now trying to return my BMW and wont be gettig another one. Oh yes for those of you that might still want to buy one, you will need to spend another 5k to get these functions, dont bother buy an Audi instead
