    My car

I've owned my 525 auto for almost 4 years, and have driven 36,000 miles without a problem. The only repair has been a new driver's door seal. It has 'conveyor belt' smoothness on the motorway; a lovely 'surge' around town; with excellent handling and 'kick' when I want it.

There are many options available when the time comes to replace it but, if the financial deals are not advantageous, then I would be happy to run it for another 2 or 3 years.

    My car

I've just bought this BMW to replace my CLK 270. The CLK was a great car and the best I had found so far in my quest for the ideal compromise between affordability, comfort, handling, performance and running costs.

The 525 knocks it for six in all respects excepting motorway cruising, where it is a little noisier, and fuel economy - looks like I'll struggle to get 40 mpg in my manual BMW against 43 in the auto Merc.

BUT . . . what an experience this saloon is! You approach any bend at any speed and the car tells you (telepathically ?) "leave this to me - no problem!" The handling is THAT good. Strangely, the steering wheel doesn't convey much under regular driving, it just makes sure the wheels do what you need when you need them to.

The greatest surprise is the ride and lack of road noise. The ride is firm, in that the car doesn't bounce unnecessarily but in no way is it hard.

It has fabulous leather and heated seats as well as the extensive standard goodies the SE comes with and the "anthraci te wood" trim (whatever that is) looks great.

The seats are supremely comfortable and the driving position excellent, tho somewhere to rest my right foot when cruise control is engaged would be useful (no the Merc didnt have one either BUT the preceding Passat did).

Performance is good but not hair-raising. The 6 cylinder motor is SOOOOO sweet tho !!

Overall, very well pleased - I'm just hoping it proves reliable!

    My car

I have had this car for about 4 months now and its really very good in most aspects. I've been getting 45mpg (combined) and on the motorway I'm sure it is significantly more than that. The ride quality is exceptional and it has that expensive car feel. I got it from Stratstone Chesterfield coz my experience in Sheffield was less than ideal. I have, however, had some problems. The first issue was with the iDrive system ... it worked perfectly but the screen just stopped working one day. It had to be replaced along with the iDrive control unit, no problems since. The second issue was with the clutch as it started squeaking which was really annoying coz the cabin is really quiet. BMW tried using some lube but that didnt work so they had to change the piston on the clutch assembly. its been OK since. Annoying though!

    My car

I have now had this car for 2 1/2 years and 46k miles and am hugely impressed. The performance, handling and overall quality of the car are second to none.

I have had none of the issues mentioned in other reviews, find the i-drive very easy to use, the bluetooth picks up all of my devices and works perfectly.

I have no issues with the ride quality, and my wife (who complained continuously about the ride in my previous cooper s) loves it.

The dealer experience has also been great. Originally looked at Jaguar (dealer too busy smoking to talk to me), Audi (no one available to discuss a6) and Mercedes (could the dealer have looked down his nose at me any more?). The BMW guy happily arranged test drives, dealt with my haggling over price and options well (got the monthly cost down over 15% from the first quote) and the hand over was spot on. Ongoing servicing easy and very cheap (compared to the mini!)

The best thing though is the engine. Between 50 and something you can play with pretty much anything and the look on their face when they realise they've been had by a diesel is priceless!
