Appalling; does not accurately convey my complete disappointment with this vehicle. I have owned the vehicle for 3 months and it has been 1 regret after another. The handling of this vehicle is like trying to u-turn a bus in quick sand. The ride quality is as smooth as a 3 legged camel tackling artic tundra. The interior is a mash of tea stained cloth that resembles a Victorian curtain/brillo pad and becomes irritable on the shortest of journeys. In all 1500 characters can not truly reflect my disgust with this car.
My 1997 1.9 turbodiesel estate has done 105,000 miles and is fantastic value for money.
It has excellent load space and tows very well. It's quiet, and even this old girl gives 50mpg on a run and nearly 40mpg with a full load and a 750kg trailer in tow.
A suspension overhaul cost less than £100 - you don't need to replace the spheres, as they can be serviced at £15 each and last as long as new ones. A lot of garages are ignorant and don't want to know - main dealer servicing on any car more than five years old is prohibitive, so look for a specialist.
I recently spoke to a sales representative in France who owns a 1.9 turbodiesel hatch which has done 526,000km (327,000 miles) in nine years and he is not planning on trading it in!
I am really lucky to own one of these rare models with HDi economy and very high specification (full leather trim, abs etc).
This is my second Xantia estate, purchased for the same price as the dreadful '99 Peugeot 206 it replaces (same year, same mileage - no comparison!). My previous '98 SX TD was good, but this HDi unit is streets ahead in terms of performance and economy.
These HDi estates are bargains if you can find one with a low mileage. They tend to have lead hard lives with 150,000 miles on them. Mine has just 49,000 miles and one owner, so a it's a bit of a rarity - definitely one to keep.
