I have owned a 1.2 (2001) for 2 years i have came across some costly repairs i.e ECU Unit (£300) but compairing it to similar sized vehicles the running costs and insurance costs seem to balance out. This car is easy to drive and handles quite well but the noisy suspension can drive you mad and unable to carry 4 passengers due to noisy suspension problem.
I owned at 2001 1.2 3dr model from new... I must have been mad.
From the day of delievery, we had to take it back, because the latch for the rear seats didn't work... not a great start.
After that It was one thing after another. I had the clutch replaced twice, and all under 36,000 miles! The second time, when the warranty had expired, they didn't believe, and told me not to drive it in the cold!
The wipers juddered, and the motor was replaced. The interior started to come apart bit by bit.
The car cost me £8000; I got a part-exchange of £1500 but sold it for £2500.
As other people have said, don't by a Punto - the JD Power surveys don't lie.
I have owned 3 Puntos. The first from new was a 1997 mark 1. This car had minor problems such as the driver’s seat cover coming away from the frame and the door rub strips coming off.
The second, which I own and bought new, is a 1.9JTD. I bought this car new in 2000. It has now done 64000 miles and has had the following faults.
Drivers seat replaced under warranty, power steering unit replaced under warranty, rear shock absorbers replaced under warranty, wiper blade motor replaced under warranty.
There was also a knocking noise coming from the steering for which the garage replaced the steering rack and the steering box but never cured it even though every time I went to collect it form the dealer after the repair it still had the same fault.
It had a new dashboard display which cost me £280 and today I have found out that the power steering unit needs replacing again but this time it's going to cost me £700.
I also owned a 1.2 16v ELX which had a problem with the gear change, the dealer replaced the second gear which didn't solve the problem and eventually change the complete gearbox, this gearbox wasn't any better than the previous one so I traded the car in for a Honda Jazz.
My Jazz has almost been faultless having only needed a new wheel bearing and egr valve replaced. So my advice to anyone even remotely considering buying any car which sports a Fiat badge is DON'T DO IT!
I bought my 2002 Punto 6 months ago for £2000. As soon as I had the car I took it to a garage to get it serviced (by a family friend). I was assured that it was all fine......
After 2 months the problems started, in the last 4 months it has had a new fan, head gasket, cat converter, timing belt (x2!), clutch and gear box, alternator, repairs on the electrics and the power steering is now playing up.
It has broken down twice whilst driving, once on a main road in Leeds at rush hour and once on the motor way!! (with no prior warning of any problems).
My advice to anybody is DO NOT BUY A FIAT PUNTO. Whilst yes they are cheap to buy, relatively low running costs and low insurance the repairs and unreliability out weigh it.
It has dropped loads in value and has had a small fortune spent on trying to repair it.
My car is going very soon and I will be glad to see the back of it.
