Bought at auction for £1.5k with 74k miles on clock about 18 months ago. Auto gearbox sensor failed £200 and slipping starter caused by damaged flywheel £450. Otherwise very quick, comfortable and quiet cruiser. Reminds me of my old 2.8i Capri, stylish and practical for 4. Very good handling and safety equipment, but headlamps good be better. Very good fuel economy for 2.5v6 auto of around 30 mpg average. Would definatly buy another.

Cougar 2.5 V6 116k 2000 X Pack £1075. If you have ever considered a real 4 seater coupe for a summer of fun the cougar is seriously worth considering. You will get a far nicer cougar than an ST24 for the same cash. Not sought after and nobody really knows what it is as only 27,000 examples were sold in UK in 4 years. Radical styling looks a lot more mainstream these days and belies it's age. The V6 is very smooth and powerful and is chain driven so no worries about cam belts snapping. Tyres are an odd ball size 215 50 16 but Kumar do a good tyre for £65 but if you want premium brand you will pay £130+ per corner. I've bought mine as a long term investment as I think these cars will be future classics and as a 2000 model will not attract new VED banding. Got a good straight top of the range X-pack with all extras except metallic paint with 5 months tax and 8 months MOT for just over a grand - that is a lot of car for the money. Only real fault is the air-con that does'nt work at all but the eyeball vents are very effective. Kids love the rear seats and when my youngest falls asleep he is held in position and not slumped forward over the belt - only drawback in interior design is the kids fighting over the single cup holder in the rear! Go on - you know you want to! Ian Sept 08

    My car

Bought £4.5k, 75k miles from 2 previous lady owners. Silver, mint condition, X pack. Drove for 2.5 excellent years. Really individual, looks great, good acceleration but auto limits. Cheap to insure/service. Great boot space (folding seats & lift top) Lovely sound, loved the styling inside - that's what you spend 99% of your time looking at. Considered Volvo c70 (dull front and inside). Only had to replace breaks/tyres/battery in 2.5 years. Then, at 110k miles, shock/spring went & rear brake calipre froze (£600), alloys all buckled (£500), power steering failed (£550) - all in 2 weeks!!! so it has to go. Trading in for CLK (£1.5k dealer trade-in)
