I bought my Ford Escort 1.6 Finesse in August 2003 and have found it to be a fine specimen from Ford. Approaching 70,000 miles, I can confirm that the car has never failed me.
With supreme handling, the quality zetec engine, excellent practicality, superb looks in amparo blue, the Escort has proven to me why the range was so successful. Ford quality!
I bought this car back in back in January of this year and have to date covered 8000miles with no real problems. I needed an automatic replacement for an 'F' Reg Mazda 323, as my wife only has an auto licence. I was fully aware of the type of gearbox on this car, as I appeared to know more than the garage owner. But with a few phone calls and delicate negotiating the price paid was a snip.
The ride/handling and room is great compared to the Mazda. I have driven numerous other cars, but can honestly say, to date this car is great value for money. The gearbox is a little quirky to get used to, but once past that hurdle, it's great to drive.
This is a no thrills car, but has goodt room and as everyone says is chaep to maintain which is fine as far as I am concerned. It will be intersting to see if the gearbox bears up for the next six years, as that is the length of time I usually keep a car for.
Very good car overall to drive, though as is common with some Escorts, electrical faults have started to occur, according to What Car's own review, damp in the fuse box can cause problems, so if anyone can tell me how to avoid damp getting in, that would be great!
This car has been driven to Spain by me and it was by far beaten by my current VW Bora, which I would recomend to any keen driver.
The Escort did well, and with a roof box and a full load of passengers and full boot, it achieved 100mph on a straight in France easily. At 3500 rpm and it still had more to give.
The Escort I had was a T-registered vehicle, and was equipped with CD player, air-conditioning and alloy wheels.
The Escort's suspension was not brilliant, and, as it was hard, we felt the bumps in the road. However, I must say it cornered well.
