I bought a real lemon when I bought this car! In my opinion, it really is a death trap - the brakes are really bad, power is sluggish and it will not go over 70mph... it actually totally lost power on the motorway.
I had owned the car for only a few days when I contacted the dealer - they told me they were not interested. They were totally rude and unhelpful (I have a sneaky suspicion that they where very aware of the faults, mind you).
I find it horrifying that a dealer can sell you such a vehicle then not want anything to do with you! I am left with a car that is unfit for use, a possibly huge garage bill and no money.
I hope the dealer can sleep safe and without conscience. Maybe next time I will be more wary of sweet-talking salesmen, but maybe second-hand cars should only be bought by mechanics.
I brought my Escort GTi back in October last year (2005). I have long been a fan of this car ever since a friend got 1 a few years ago. Hugely underestimated, got mine for £2000, perfect condition, with only 43000 miles with every MOT and Service receipts, Red key, x2 original black keys and more.
For £2000 you can get a sporty looking car, 1.8i 16v engine, electric windows, air-con, ABS, leather seats, central locking, spoiler, side skirts, front fog lights, sun roof and more, not bad for that money.
Parts are cheap to replace due to there being so many escorts in circulation, not to mention the fact most mondeo, fiesta and even puma parts are exactly the same.
Not as quick as the GTi badge would suggest but never the less still a quick car capable of 0-60 in under 9 seconds and easily push 130mph with more to give, but obviously not advisable. No matter how good a driver, high speeds can and often cause major accidents so don't be stupid and try it!!
An overal rating of 5 simply because for the price of the car you get so much value for money, remember it was orinally a £15,000 car!!
Like all Escorts can have certain problems, such as eractic revs, electric issues and so on but all common and fairly cheap to fix.
Insurance Group 13 is perhaps a little bit excessive.
Would advise to buy if looking for a cheap, reliable, sporty car that we last and put a smile on your face time and time again.
bought my 1999 escort finesse when it was 2 years old with 9500 miles on the clock - now 5 years and 73000 miles of my own added i can honestly say this car has NEVER broken down. A cambelt at 60000 together with new pads and discs, one battery, spark plugs and a new exhaust is the only expense (apart from tyres)i have had! This together with regular at home oil changes has kept the car going all this time and it has never had a dealer service. shame they dont make them any more as i would have replaced it with a new one at 100000 miles. never mind though on to 150000 i go!
This car is great, and well worth its four stars. It could better if it had electric windows, maybe, but apart from that, it is great.
It is a pleasure to drive, is very comfy and has a lot of room and storage space. Fords are great, and the Escort is a prime example of this. People may be put off because it is a slightly bigger car, but I see no problem with a bigger car, I even find it easier to drive and park.
Parts are easy to find and it is cheap to run - there is nothing more you could want!
