The only reason I give this car a three-star rating instead of two is because although it frequently breaks itself, it is extremely cheap to fix.
It is a pain though that most of its life is spent in the garage or stripped apart on my driveway.
It's useless as a family car but OK as a runabout, and look how cheap they are.
I have had the car from new and initially the car performed well, however, as the years went by and the mileage increased (average 9400 miles per annum), the car became more prone to problems and it made me think why did I buy it in the first place.
Still the car is very practical, with a good amount of space inside. Apart from this the trips to the mechanic have been fairly often even if the repairs themselves were not particularly expensive.
The current mileage is 95K on the old 1994 model which, apart from the plastic bumpers still looks good (especially after a good wash & polish).
Now though the engine has become very harsh after 3000rpm and i think that the engine has lost some of its power.
Overall, this 1.6 16v escort was a reasonable car which could easily with minimal effort have been made into a very good car.
I live on the Isle of Wight and I own a 3dr 1.8si with 114,000+ miles on the clock. I find that the car responds to anything that I throw at it.
I also find that the Zetec engine is very smooth through the rev range.
It is very good.
