A little gem, bought for £895 for my grandma, it has 63k on the clock, ran like new, she has now owned it 2 years and it hasn't missed a beat, it's cheap to run, engine revs and goes like a dream. It now has nearer 80k on it and still has many miles left!
Fantastic car, 98 1.3 Fiesta. clocked up 180,000 Miles and has been super reliable. Started on the button at -16 after sitting 2 weeks. Done a 600 mile journey in it trouble free. Really cant put into words how good this car is. Owned it for 5 years and have only had to replace a belt and other regulars. Has gone 20,000 over a service and still runs good for the miles. I love Opels but the corsa are dog poo compared to these old Endura engined Fords =)
This car is used for commuting in favour of my 4x4 for economy reasons. It is possible to get 50 mpg on a long journey if you stick to 60 mph. This was really good news when petrol cost £1.20 a gallon. The ancient design of engine is crude and loud, but the good news is that it's easy to work on and parts are cheap. There's no cambelt to worry about either. It's not the daunting cramped and complex device found under most bonnets these days. That makes it ideal for the home mechanic. My sump rusted out though which is a fault probably unique to these engines (how does that happen when they are full of oil-a great rust inhibitor?)and that cost £150 at a local garage to fix. It has no electrics to go wrong - Yes. I have to wind the windows by hand. In my book that's less weight to carry around and less to go wrong. It has great handling even on the little 13inch tyres which cost just £30. Insurance is buttons, tax is in the cheap pre 2001 range. When buying check for rust. I saw a couple before this one with more rust than any 7 year old car should have. I do hunderds of miles a week and it's fine to drive. This car is the definition of cheap and cheerful.
This car has been in my family since 96 and I've had it for the past 4 years. I am currently looking for a new car and its only due to this I'm starting to really love this one so much. Nothing I have driven gets up to speed anywhere near as fast as my current Fiesta (including the latest 2008/9 Fiesta, Fiat 500 and Nissan Micra, amongst others). Over the years we've had it it's only the past 2 years it has really cost much to maintain and half of that was due to one garage fitting a wrong part! A fantastic nippy car, happily does 80 on the motorway so is great for overtaking. A joy to drive and good on fuel. The plastic bumpers are also a unforseen plus point, once a Mercedes hit me and whilst their car front was ruined the rear bumper had taken the majority of the impact leaving my car amazingly dent free. Only down sides are the old interior (tape deck, no air con etc) no power steering, and with it being so light its a little hairy in high winds. Overall highly recommended, especially for a first car!
