I also own a classic 1987 Mini, and I use my X-reg (last of the 2001) 1.8TDdi Encore as a daily runner.
The fuel economy is fantastic. It takes £35 to fill from empty, and I always get anything from 350-400 miles with ease - and I boot it!
It's quite smooth, although it can be noisy in the cabin. The turbo is brilliant, very responsive! Motorway cruising is brilliant too, it'll sit happily at 70 revving quite low, put you're foot down to overtake and it will reach higher speeds in no time. The torque is fantastic! I believe the engine is one they used in the Transit, so if it can power one of those, imagine what it does for a small hatchback!
One of the only gripes would have to be the equipment - I know it's bottom of the range, and is only my runaround, but no central locking, no aircon, on electric windows, and there wasn't a CD player as standard. Rear suspension also needed replacing when I got the car, and rust can appear if not looked after. Tax is also high - £160 for 12 months atm, and insurance is group 6 (not good for a 19 year old!).
My next car I'm going for a brand new Fiesta Zetec S, and I'm definitely going for the 1.6TCdi.
Overall - Good little car, that's brilliant on fuel economy, very nippy and torquey and it'll run forever and ever and ever!
I bought my 1999 model two months ago and I am quite impressed with it.
I am not impressed with the fuel economy, averaging about 250 miles from a tank, but this might be because I sold an Astra diesel and got this.
Overall, with electric windows, heated front and rear screens, and air-conditioning, this isn't a bad package.
I bought this model as a second car, because the family MPV was too expensive to run over 200 miles a week.
Running costs are great - it averages 45-50mpg with town and rural driving. In 4000 miles, the car has only cost £60 on having the heater fixed (and that was a Ford dealership).
It's a fantastic car and if your back seat passengers do not need much space, it's highly recommended.
Ford Fiesta P reg, 1.3 Endura-E I have owned this for just over 2 years. Originally it ran perfect and there were no problems. However, over the last year I have had to replace the head gasket, exhaust system, block, and re bore a cyclinder. This wouldnt be such a problem if I were causing the problems, but I'm not. Before buying your own. Test drive it and get a thorough mechanical inspection of every part, otherwise, you may end up spending a lot more in the futre!
