I bought this car in a part-exchange deal for an ST220 hatchback. At first I was underwhelmed, I thought the gearbox was slow and sticky, I thought the performance for a car with so much torque was disappointing. I was struggling to get anywhere near the MPG figures quoted, which was the main reason for buying the car as my daily commute to work had risen from 10 mile a day to 80.
Now however, with 20,000 miles on the clock, my opinion is completly the oppisite. The six-speed gearbox is now as smooth as the five-speed was on my ST, the performance once the engine is warm is excellent and I regulary achieve 550 miles between fill-ups.
Nothing has gone wrong, it never fails to start first time. Do I miss the ST? Yes I do but I do not miss the running costs.
I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a spacious fast and frugal estate car. The quality is as good or better than a couple of BMWs I have owned. If only the depreciation was as good - Ford would not fail to sell a single one it produced.
PS This is my first ever diesel - I am now a reformed petrolhead!
The engine and gearbox are brilliant, and great around town.
The equipment levels inside are top class. Switch gear and quality have been great. Space is huge, but then finding a parking space is not ideal, and watch those doors.
Handling is fantastic on A roads and the motorway. This Ford is great for finding the right seat position, and everything is adjustable.
The quality of this model is good, but the economy and driving position are the best.

Why is there so much whining about the rear sets? It's small - it's called a "mini" (hint). It didn't get any smaller after you bought it, so deal…
