Swapped from a 1.9 td Volvo V40 (p reg) to this car which is second hand, 2002 model.
First things first - its MILES AHEAD of the Volvo, in terms of safety, comfort, style & performance.
Its comfy - nice ride - drives well - great chassis - good performance for diesel, pulls well when the turbo kicks in.
I have driven the Vectra 150 bhp SRi Turbo Diesel & this drives really well in comparison.
The Vectra costs £22,000, the Mondeo £16,000 - only thing the vectra had more was trip computer, cruse & traction control oh & 35 more bhp & 6 speed, but I say buy your wife a Ford Ka with the change & keep her happy too.
Overall - great car - very safe 8 airbags and ABS, very nice - buy one you won't be disappointed!!!
My previous car was a petrol driven Mondeo Ghia and it was excellent. This model does not compare.
The suspension is awfull and the engine is incredibly easy to stall.
It is also noisy compared with other diesel engined cars I have experience of such as the MG ZT-T. I would never buy another one.
It's essential to get a good discount to counteract the steep depreciation. I got it for £14,250 with £300 options thrown in for free.
The 1.8 engine is fine for normal or motorway driving, however if the car is heavily loaded it will drag a bit. Steering and precision is excellent as has come to be expected from Ford of recent, unfortunately the brakes are not as sharp and although the Ford always stops it lacks the positive feel of say a Passatt when braking.
Ride is slightly harsh. You can feel some changes in surface and road noise on poor surfaces can be excessive but this is the balance to take when going for the more sporty option. Wind noise however can be quite loud at higher speeds seeming to be from the mirrors and the top of the windows.
The car has been very reliable only problems experienced were faulty central locking receiver unit on the car and a CD player that decided to self distruct. Both faults occured after about 1yr/14,000 miles but both were replaced under warrenty by Ford.
On the whole a good car, just suffers from alot of them on the road knocking the second hand value.
Yes I like the car, very well equipped, I have had the car a year and have had very few problems.
I had a VW Passat, previous, which I bought new in 1998, and I was very disappointed with all the problems I had with the car.

I've had 6 VWs now including this one and it is a mixed bag. In no particular order the economy is poor despite the FSI badging and in town never…
Why is there so much whining about the rear sets? It's small - it's called a "mini" (hint). It didn't get any smaller after you bought it, so deal…
