I bought a 2001 Accord 4 years ago. It was an ex fleet car with 70,000 miles on the clock, more expensive than the general 2nd hand fodder but I was lured by the rumours of near mystical reliability. Having lived most of my car life on a diet of Renaults, Fiats and Alfas the attraction was obvious.
I have now done a total of 245000 miles. Yes, you read correctly, 245000 miles! And it has never let me down once. The only work I have had to have done is the usual wear and tear. New discs and pads etc and recently a new clutch. For goodness sake it still has it's original exhaust!!
The engine is as smooth as the day I got it, pulls as well as ever, needs revving hard if you really want to move away quickly, but that's a vtec for you. Sure it needs a little more oil than it used to, but that's to be expected.
Gripes? Well, I guess the steering is a bit vague but it does corner fine. The colours this car comes in are vile so get a silver model, and the fuel consumption isn't great, but not bad. I would buy another tomorrow, prob go for the 2 litre next time as it's a bit torquier, or even better i-CTDi. But if you want trouble free driving, the rumours are true. This is the car.
I've even got a great idea to stretch your budget if you wanted to - rip up your RAC and AA cards and put the money towards the car. It really is that reliable.
Finished gushing now. I don't even work for Honda.
I bought my 2ltr SE Hacthback Accord in 2000 and have driven 75000+ miles and have NEVER had anything go wrong. The only thing that broke was the plastic tie which is attached to the petrol cap. I changed the timing belt at 70000 miles and that VTEC engine is superb,it revs just as much as it did when it was new. I will be sorry when I part with it as I have never had such a reliable car. I will go for another Honda but the CRV appeals more than the new Accord. Its a pity Honda doesn't have a hatchback now as they are so useful and practical. I have regular sevicing at a Honda agent so albeit that is not cheap it kept my Accord going great guns.
I bought this car in 2006 with 36000 miles on the clock. It is a 2001 make . Now it has done 68000 miles in total and there has been no serious issues. It has fantastic reliability but thats about it. The body roll is irritating and so is the firmish low speed ride and interior trim noise. The paint work is easily chipped and gearbox is notchy.
As said previously, this car is not in the List its a 1.8 VTEC SE (5Dr, Man).
These are great cars, very comfortable, reliable, fast, and responsive, my wife and I love the car. I have replaced headlamp bulb only in over 2 and a half years, plus some minor work for the last MOT. The cruise, which I love, stopped working but I am told it just needs minor electrical fault finding.
The ONLY downside with this car, as said previously, is the fuel consumption, best I have ever got was low 30s, around town middle 20s if that.
In fact we have been looking at getting a diesel for this very reason, as petrol is now so expensive you are watching the gauge all the time.

Had this car for 90k from new. A 56 plate. In over 2,000,000 miles driven this one has broken down the most of any car I have had. DO NOT get a 2.0…
