I have been running Jaguars for many years now and this car has undoubtedly the best build quality of all of them. The V8 engine is superbly refined and the gearbox slurs through the changes.
For a large car, the handling is outstanding and the interior is just as I expected. It's a Jaguar, and that spells class. On the downside, the V8 is undoubtedly thirsty, as thirsty as my last 4.0-litre in-line six, but you don't buy a Jag XJ for economy. I get an immense amount of pleasure every time I climb into this car, I never tire of it and it always gets looks of admiration wherever I go.
As a secondhand buy, I can only thoroughly recommend this car. Compared with the latest XJ model (which looks like an inflated X-Type) the Jaguar XJ8 still retains all the elegant styling cues of the past, with low slung bonnet, roofline, and powerful haunches.
The interior has an ambience that just cannot be matched by its German or Japanese rivals. There is something unique about a British car with leather, chrome and wood, that has been copied the world over, but never matched or surpassed.
The layout may well be cramped given that the car is 5m in length, but the feel-good factor more than makes up for any short comings.
As for the engine and transmission, "smooth" is the key word. Even the 3.2 with 240bhp has more than enough get up and go when required. Regardless of the revs, the V8 never feels stretched, and the five-speed auto box is always intuitive enough to pick the right gear when needed.
I strongly believe that the 97-03 XJ is the last of the classic four-door Jags. For a relatively small outlay, who wouldn't like to look out of their window to see a beautiful car like the XJ8 parked on the driveway? Adjust the air-con, settle back in the sumptuous leather seats, revel in the driving experience, and congratulate yourself that you bought a £40k car for the price of a typical euro box.
I have owned this car for four years and it has been totally reliable over the 37,000 miles covered. I'm still on the original tyres!
It's a lovely smooth and powerful car, which drives superbly. Rear space is OK for my needs.
I enjoy using the J-gate to maximise performance. Bodywork is still excellent, with no signs of rust. I love the wood and leather giving the cabin a lovely olde world ambiance. Would only change this car for the latest XJ8 !
I have owned 1999 4.0 version since 2000. Truly an excellent car and far better than MB's previously owned.Fuel is 22 - 27 mpg depending on how driven and road conditions. Annual service at jaguar dealer approx £500. Heavy on tyres, but NOTHING GOES WRONG,so overall costs are good, considering the class of the car
