I have always rated this car highly until problems recently with transmission.
The gearbox has developed a rattle at 1500 to 2500 rpm and KIA UK refuse to repair it under warranty stating it is 'characteristic' and not a problem.
This characteristic noise sounds as though a bag of spanners has been left in the bottom of the gearbox and turns heads.
I have since found out that the Carens, which shares a similar 5 speed box, suffers the similar problems and in countries other than the UK, the noise problems are being addressed under warranty. Gearbox failures have also been reported after these noise problems.
I am in contact with other owners who are very angry as I am about the sidestepping of warranty responsibilities.
I have owned my XS auto for 3 months bought as a demo with 1900 mls on the clock,
I was appalled at the fuel consumption of 21mpg and an annoying flat spot on pulling away, yes the car just completely conks out then comes back to life, back to the dealer, cant find a fault.
Fuel consumption? It will get better with more miles on the clock, it's now done almost 8,000 and I am now getting 24 mpg - great for a car that claims double that. I also tow a caravan, but don't bother as it wouldn't pull a sailor off your granny. No, I am not a fan of Kia's Sportage.
After test-driving all the compact SUVs around, I picked the Sportage.
I have owned my Sportage for 13 days now, and can say with all honesty I'm glad I got one.
I guess it depends what you are used to, but I haven’t noticed any significant body roll, and my commute to work down some country lanes is always a pleasure.
It's comfortable, well equipped and more than capable in a muddy field.
I'm getting 33mpg and better as I pile on the miles.
Good driving position, the automatic that I took for a test drive was well refined through the gears with ample power.
It does everything you ask of it, but I can't help wondering why they haven't got a larger range of engines (a 2500cc CRDI would be the icing on the cake for me) that would convince me to buy one.
The external features are great-looking with twin exhaust tailpipes that make it seem more powerful than it is. Overall it is a great looking motor, the cabin area is well laid out with everthing to hand & a couple of nice touches such as digital compass readout on the rearview mirror, & the triple layer centre storage armrest ( time will tell as to how long this would last in the real world though ?)
Much better looking & practical sized car than the sorrento i think but does need that bigger engine
