I bought the IS220d SE in March having had the previous petrol modal 5 years ago.
Overall I'm pretty unhappy with it, the gripes of fuel have already been covered but my main moan is the gearing. Not being able to use 6th gear until 80mph! I had always intended on buying an automatic car but this really is a step the other way. I have never had to change gears so much on the motorway!! Covering 35000m pa, this is really bad news. So sadly I will be joining the heard and buying a 320d in March! Boo
Also more rattles than i would have expected, dashboard speaker cover and a nasty one somewhere under the gearstick. Come on Lexus, must try harder!!
I do not like keyless entry and ignition. Inside the IS looks surprisingly like the excellent IS models it replaces.
The Whatcar review makes me suspicious of road noise and rattles.Fuel consmption will become a growing problem It is a nice place to sit in, and the dealers will ply you with coffee and tea.
The jury is still out, in my case, the quoted prereg prics on the lexus website are too high. An IS250 with 10,000 on the clock and now a 05 year old is being sold at a slight discount from brand new.
This car is a replacement to my Mercedes C180. The driving experience is considerably better, its quick, handles well and looks good. I went for the multimedia pack which I would definitely recommend, sat nav is great, as is the stereo (using wma files I can transfer 10-12 cds on to 1 cd. With a 6 cd changer I can have 60-70 albums in the car with no fuss).
Downsides have already been mentioned here - road noise is higher than I'd expect, and fuel consumption is abysmal. Also, the rear view mirror vibrates when driving which can be annoying.
Overall though, pleased I bought the Lexus rather than the usual equivalents.
Excellent car to drive and look at.
If you're after pure driving look at BMW, for interior quality its Audi and for badge snobs its Mercedes. However, if you're looking for the total package of looks, quality, refinement, residual value you can't beat lexus.
The only negative point is the diesel - its doesnt give me more than 30mpg around town and barely averages 35mpg on the motorway! way off the 44.8mpg average! Otherwise, great car....
