We bought this car (March 2005) for my wife as she prefers to drive smaller cars, and wanted one with a higher perspective for the driver. We have been very pleased with it. The interior is practical and well laid out. All controls are to hand and the seating is comfortable enough for journeys of a couple of hours or so. Not sure how they would be for longer periods though. Did have a couple of minor teething troubles early on (drivers electric window and rear seat catch), but both were rectified under warranty by the dealership and have been fine ever since. I found it particularly useful last year when I had some serious back pain and couldn't bend adequately to get in my Vectra, but the Mazda has loads of room, and I could get in and out without a problem. Thoroughly recommended for anyone who wants a reliable comfortable little car.
I bought the car when it was 9 mths old from a local dealer. I have had problems with the electric window on the driver's side. When wet the window does not work. Have complained many times to the dealer and they spray, but have not replaced. I have had problems with oil. Serviced in January 2006 and twice since then, I have had to top up oil from almost Zero. Have complained to dealer and they tell me that Mazda say this is reasonable!!! Recently the car broke down on the A9 and had to be transported back to Inverness, coil had broken.
I bought the car on the basis of reliability, but it has not lived up to reputation. Drove Nissans before this for almost 20 years and had very few problems and sold after about 5 years.
Would not expect such major problems while car still under warranty. Very disppointed and would not buy another Mazda.
I have no complaints about this car!!...its just fantastic. I was reading all the reviews, and i would like to point out that the Mazda 2 is based on the Ford Fiesta & Fusion and indeed it is build in Valencia Spain, along the Ford Models!!
It shares common parts with Ford and so to me it's a Ford car rather than a Mazda. I have nothing wrong against Ford, however since i am japan fan i would prefer to have a complete Japense Car, say a Honda or Toyota!! rather than a re-branded car..!!!
By the Way, the Mazda 2 engines are ford and not Mazda! so becareful and never trust what the Showroom salesman tells you!! Keep this in mind - he does not care about the customer, he just wants to sell his stock!! so be-careful, always seek advise before you approach to buy something! Goodluck.

We brought the car for my wife to commute to work and for taking the kids to school, we certainly haven't regretted it. The build quality is excellent and apart from the Honda Jazz it was the only car with excellent leg room and space in general, you also get alot of extras as standard i.e. air con, cd player etc. Tax and insurance costs are low as well.
The drive is nice, no rattles and the engine copes well when doing over 70mph (it doesn't scream).
We brought the car for Mazda reliabilty as we have been very pleased with our Mazda 323 diesel.
'Touch wood' we hope we have the Mazda 2 is just as reliable as our 323 and we would certainly recommend the car to family and friends.
ps Not sure if one of the early reviews on this car is true, the Mazda dealership we brought the car from informed us the Mazda 2 is built in Japan and NOT Spain and there are no Ford parts underneath the bonnet.
