Bought this car in July 09 as a demonstrator with about 4000 miles on the clock. It followed an A3 TDI Sport and an Octavia VRS diesel. Much as I enjoyed the VRS the Mazda is in my view a more rounded package. Less overtly sporting but more refined and just as quick with less understeer and a better ride than the stiffly sprung Skoda and ridiculously hard riding A3. Engine is smoother with more linear power delivery and the equipment level is much higher. The blind spot monitoring system is brilliant and if the EU want to do something useful for once they shold make it compulsory! Doing 25K plus miles a year, I've gone through a lot of cars over the years and this is the only one that has not had a single fault in 58000 miles. Interior is well put together but not in the Audi league although the quality of the carpet seems a bit poor. Plenty of room for adults in the back and a big boot area.Comfortable long distance cruiser and on board display normally shows over 50mpg. I'm ready for a change but it has been such a good car I'm reluctant to get rid of it!
When I needed to buy a replacement for my SUV I decided to go the family car route. The Mazda6 stood out amongst the pack as one of the most stylish cars on the road. I bought in April 2008 took delivery September 2008 I have yet to take the car on a long journey but still average 41 MPG, the interior in Sports spec. is excellent, with plenty of gadgets and a very good sound system.Yes there are better sound systems but your talking about Bang and O and mark Levinson which cost considerably more money. I was surprised as to how good the ride is on 18" wheels it is not jarring just planted. Also the handling is excellent, try a twisty country road and the car will amaze you with it's agility.Good brakes strong pull on the Diesel engine nice snappy gearchange.Loads of room in the Boot and very comfortable to sit in. The negatives are few and far between, but when the gearbox is cold be patient and dont rush the change.
I have had this car since June 2008 and covered 12,000 miles without any problems. Fuel economy is decent for 2L petrol (approx 36 mpg). Performance is quite good, sharp handling and feels sporty. It is refined and effortless on motorways especially with the slick steering wheel mounted cruise controls. 6 speed manual changeover is quick and precise. 2L petrol has twin tailpipes which makes it look more sporty than the diesel model, especially in black. Only wish it had the TS2 17" alloys as the 16's look a bit small for the wheel arches. Interior looks and feels quite sporty although hard plastics are a bit on the Japanese side. Very good car though, probably the best around for £16k or less if you look around.
After my previous 6 estate's life ended prematurely, I opted for this diesel hatchback. The last one did 42k miles without one fault, so reliability was key influence. So was handling, which was superb.
I took delivery in March 08 and since have covered 11k miles - much of it in Europe, driving on all sorts or roads through 20 countries, including Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia, all in the height of summer with temperatures around 37C.
To date, nothing has gone wrong. The car handled Albanian dirt tracks as well as autobahns. The joy is the handling - a real driver's car, but add to that the looks, equipment, quality and practicality, and you have a real winner. The sport comes with some very beneficial accessories like headlight washers for the bi-xenon adaptive lights, bluetooth, tyre pressure warning and so on.
It's more refined than the last 6 but it's kept the sharp handling. This is still at the expense of comfort - no fun on washing board concrete Czech motorways but less bad on other rough surfaces.
Faults? Economy is poorer than my last 6 (44 mpg instead of 48) when it should actually be better. It is gradually improving and the car is noticeably loosening up - last one somehow didn't need to. And I hope I never have to use the puncture repair kit. However the electric pump is handy for the bike tyres!
This is a very competitive sector but I've no regrets in choosing the 6.
