    My car

I have just finished an extended test drive in this car. It has just over 2000 miles on the clock & compared to the 2.0D LS Estate I drove 3 or 4 weeks ago felt more eager. The ride was also a little softer but the ride handling compromise to my mind better judged than the estate.

The car seemed to be generally quieter than the estate as well.

Fuel consumption avearged about 41-42 - better than the previous car on test but still a little disappointing when compared to the 'official' figures.

General build quality was as high as expected i.e. very good but some of the plastics on the steering wheel are perhaps a little cheap? Not convinced about all teh stereo functions & air con etc being controlled from the wheel either. That said if you dont use teh controls there - its a major stretch to reach the controls on the central dash for the radio etc. Form over function?

Still not convinced by the engine/gearbox combination but in other respects a very fine car - great handling, loads of space, good quality, handsome.

Overall I think this lower spec model is probably the better but that the LS/Sport spec.

6th gear still seems to long

    My car

Like several other reviewers, I enjoy my new Mazda, but have serious concerns about petrol consumption.

I had the same previous model and it returned 42/43mpg - as Mazda states. I have filled up on three occasions and the consumption is 38/39mpg on the same type of travel, not 50.4mpg.

It has had a diagnostic test and they say it's OK - no it isn't! They are going to do a drive test next.

The adaptive front lighting system is to be replaced under warranty - the headlights are on all the time. Has anyone got any answers from or a claim against Mazda? What will happen when I tow a caravan (yes, I'm one of them...) - I dread to think.

    My car

Having owned many different makes over the years this is my first Mazda. I have only had the car for two weeks but so very impressed with the whole package.

I have read the other reviews and can't find fault with the car. Still to determine realistic fuel consumption but early indications suggest low 40's. If anyone was considering this car my advice "get to a dealer and test drive" only problem is you will be "hooked".

I have read "What Car" review and can't see why they how or why they have downrated the facia plastics. This is a very good car.

    My car

I note Graham Bird's comments on fuel consumption with interest.

I have an 06 Mazda 6 TS2 diesel which has averaged 36mpg for its entire 19,000 miles. I questioned this poor fuel consumption with the dealer and Mazda, and was also told that this would improve after 5000 miles.

I am still challenging Mazda on this matter, given that I know many people, and have my own experience, with comparable 2.0 diesels that easily average over 45mpg.

I have asked Mazda to confirm that their customers should expect fuel consumption to vary from 30-40% from published figures.
