I have driven the Mazda 6 2.3MPS. On the road, it is a very sporty car. It also very practical. The fuel economy is good as well. But the Mazda 6 is too normal. The MPS is a bit too little too late. But if you want one, go for it.
I have just changed from a 2003 1.8 TS to a 2006 2.0 TS2.
After trawling around different dealers looking at different makes and models, I could not find anything that comes close to a Mazda 6 in terms of price, drive running costs (ridiculously cheap servicing), and equipment - and that included so-called prestige models at over £20,000.
It's a shrewd buy for anybody who needs a family car but isn't ready for the boredom of owning one.
Having owned this car for a week I can honestly say this is the most affordable performance saloon that is easy to live with as well as being extremely entertaining to drive when you are in the mood for acceleration!
I plan on keeping the car for a while and so can forgive the the depreciation of around 60% over 3 years/36k miles. The car is not the cheapest to run with an average fuel economy of 23mpg over the first 400 miles and servicing due every 9000 miles. But these are small prices to pay for the fun factor.
And so to the driving, the car is civilised and silent when changing up quickly and keeping the revs below 2000RPM. However take it to just over 2500RPM and the turbo kicks in progressively to give the kind of shove that makes this car feel truely sporty. The exhaust note is mild which suits me and the handling is first rate.
The car looks great has excellent kit (carpet mats as standard!) and if it's as reliable as the regular Mazda 6 is then there should be nothing to worry about in this department. The sales guy was very good, I have yet to see how servicing and after sales work out, fingers crossed.
I have just bought a 2006 model Mazda 6 after having a 2003 model for three years. What a great car - the improvements are most welcomed. There's more power, a six-speed gearbox, and an ultra-quiet cabin with great sound system. Mazda, I'm a 6 customer for life. No more Audi nor BMWs for me!
