    My car

My car has been the typical curate's egg - good in parts. It has been both a handsome, refined and comfortable car - yet required a £900 suspension rebuild for its first MOT (£600 was paid towards this by M-B).

However, I write this review today after hearing that the timing chain has gone at 85 000 miles - with a full service history. My mechanic has told me that this is a common fault of the lower-tuned C180 engine, which has apparently a Mitsubishi base. Other engines are said to be reliable. Apart from these two rather critical faults, the graphics on the dash would embarrass a Casio watch and it has had a persistent rattle in the driver's door (from a loose door lock cable)

I did really like this car until today, and was an M-B fan. Now, I cannot recommend this car, at least not in this model.

    My car

The C270 CDI Classic was my first Mercedes, I bought it with 14,000 miles on the clock and ran it up to 78,000 in exactly two years. This is a fantastic car. Fast, economical, reliable and good looking.

My company pay towards the running costs and when my boss saw the 270 badge he said "are we running that?" Minutes later he said "you are getting 42mpg and it is going up!" That day I took it easy and averaged 47mpg.

We have two Mercedes dealers in town, one is Glitzy and the other more down to earth. When I had a broken bracket on the turbo the Glitzy garage quoted for the repair, said they would have the part here in two days and told me I also needed to spend £1100.00 on the brakes(at 20K miles). The other garage quoted slightly less, explained that they always keep one of these parts in stock. They did the job while I waited and while they were doing the job I asked them to look at the brakes. They said it was just as well that I asked, my front pads were worn out and they changed them for £47.00

Since then, I have used the Tiptronic to slow down because brakes could be expensive and besides, I have to clean all the black dust off the front wheels. By 78,000 miles, the car is still on its original discs!

Recommend strongly. I am told that the 5 cylinder C270 was one of the best models made but it was discontinued because it was noisy. I would agree, but actually liked the noise of a big, well made diesel engine!

    My car

I have owned my car from new since Dec 2004 (face lifted model) and it has now done 40K miles. I still enjoy the vehicle, and consider it to continue to be an excellent car. The only fault I have had was worn out front suspension bushes - I put the car in a month for its first MoT (when they were found) and so got the work (£350) done under the warranty. Now that it is out of warranty I get the servicing done at an independent specialist as the cost is 40% cheaper. I would (and probably will) buy a new “new shape” C Class. However, I think I'll hang on a couple of years yet and get some more value out of this car and wait until the dealers are more realistic about negotiating on a price, particularly in the present economic environment. In summary, I made the correct decision 4 years ago.

    My car

I have owned this from 55 k to 120k miles and have found it to be very reliable, and also cheap to maintain, using the warranty until end of year 3, and an accredited garage to do everything else. New discs at 60k, track rod ends at 80k, DPF light came on at 110k. Tyres tend to wear in the middle on the rear, and the edges on the front, despite the pressures being correct. Fuel economy excellent with 50mpg on a run with BP ultimate (and yes it does make a difference)Selling now but would entertain another
