Bought as a tow car. 47k miles.FSH , approved used main dealer. One of the last of the pre face lift.Has that oil burner "aroma" and vinyl seats ( sorry .. man made leather ) but clean and tidy. So had everything crossed. Pleasantly surprised. 3k miles so far and excellent . No unexpected issues . No need for extra cooling. Seven speed box very slightly notchy at low speeds. Feels a bit flat when cold and set to C mode -warms up a treat goes like stink if you need it to- v . responsive . Took pity on neighbours and early morning noise so had the SBC brake pump noise supressor pipe mod done f.o.c. as part of deal. Barely notice the sound now. Wouldn't touch one of these without full history and cat 1 warranty ( which it has) . You need it. Eg rear suspension sensor replaced after two months, ditto parking sensor over exhaust, and I expect a few more of the tech bits to fail so I'll fork out for an extension next year. V nice. Will return over 38mpg on run , 24mpg towing 1.5 tonnes and 34 just mooching around. Still have fingers crossed a bit though. Service due anither 3k and I'm expecting to have to remortgage. Worth it though . Just. Beats the heck out of the Chelsea tractor alternative.
Fabulous car Never a days problem Only issue on starting is the Goodies turn off to preserve battery power if left for a week but car starts and after a few miles all the goodies are available again Holds the road better than my BMW !This diesel car is Blooming Quick 0 to 62 at 7.2sec I dont think i will ever sell it
I keep reading articles saying " never buy a manual Merc"- I buy them because they're much cheaper than automatics and the gearbox is very durable.The six speed box is light as is the clutch, a huge improvement on earlier transmissions but the motoring Journo's seem to be relying on old data. The S211 is spacious and rides as well as my S class. The seats aren't up to previous designs and the interior is just plain poor quality in places- the storage compartments have been quality assured by Airfix . Still, on once underway, the CDI 220 is very quiet and fuel economy can enter the mid fifties with restraint.The Aircon.despite it's sophistication can't deliver cool air to the face and warm air to the feet at the same time which will be enough to put many seasoned drivers off. Mine, a late 2004 is now showing 70,000miles with no detectable wear and is a comfortable long distance cruiser, with room for five adults and their luggage. Service costs are obviously higher than Ford/Vauxhall but residual values more than compensate. If you need a decent long term practical and cost effective executive car than this model warrants close attention.

When I bought the car at 33 months old I paid just for the accessories. The whole value of the underlying car itself had depreciated completely.
It's not been plain sailing. A relatively trivial problem with the Driving Dynamic seats took my Stealership 187 days to fix. They treated me right in terms of loan cars, but 187 days to fix a seat!!
I'm now up to 75K miles. It's the most comfortable, effortless cruiser. I did Switzerland in a oner at Christmas with the family packed in like sardines. We hardly noticed the miles go by. I've got the HarmonKardon speakers. The Comand sat nav system is childs play, unlike BMW's iDrive.
The 500 is a little extravagant on the CO2. Consumption isn't far off the E320CDi (the one I ran averaged 29mpg compared with the 23 I get as normal with the 500), petrol is cheaper and cleaner, the 2nd hand price is less and it comes with more toys. I have to do over 120K miles before the CDI would have been a cheaper proposition.
306hp can be a hoot in a way the diesel just isn't! And at 40mph it's doing 1050 rpm.A gentle mway run can top 30mpg.A bad morning in London can be 6 though; get the train!
However, the stealerships are incompetent, so be careful.They are very complex machines so going outside the dealer network may not be a good idea.
