    My car

Since I bought this car from new four years ago,it has had more recalls than I care to remember. Most of these were only raised when I arranged for the car to be serviced. On the road the drive is excellent: good fuel economy on a run-48+ to the gallon. Cabin quality is poor: servicing and extras unbelievably expensive. Mercedes seem at last to have rectified this models original faults: they now need to turn their attention to the abysmal after sales service.

    My car

I had an an E270 CDI Auto model, 2003 reg. It's been in and out of the workshop more times then I care to remember.

It's had several recalls, had its dashboard display replaced (though luckily during warranty time) and now to top it all, its gearbox has been replaced, only to breakdown again on the way home from the workshop!

This all happened just after the extended warranty ran out (which incidently cost £630 the first year, and they now wanted £871 for the current (2nd) year!).

The car had only completed 23,000 miles when the gearbox stopped functioning. I must have picked up a real 'Friday' car, but I would not recommend this model to anyone.

    My car

After 24,000 miles, what do I think? Well, in terms of driving and performance, it's first class. Fuel consumption is good: I have had over 40mpg on motorway journeys. I have driven it across Europe and not had a single problem.

However, the ownership experience is variable. It has had a couple of minor fuel leaks (not a big deal, it just needed a new clip) but diesel stinks and I called out Mobilo: they were great and sorted it on the spot.

The telephone wouldn't work from time to time and wasn't sorted until I changed from a Mercedes-Benz-owned dealer (utter rubbish - they had demotivated staff who seemed to actively dislike their customers) to an independant dealership, who fixed everything in one go. Since then, I have had no complaints at all.

If you do buy one over 3 years old, consider the Mercedes-Benz Service Contract. For about £55 per month (depends on the annual mileage), this effectively extends the warranty to six years and covers all servicing costs, tyres excluded. My last service included new pads and discs, as well as a brake fluid change, and came in at £800, so it's quite good value.

The trend appears to be that the more electronics you have on board the worse it can get! COMMAND is supposed to be wonderful but I think that's a myth. Buy a TomTom and be happy. The Distatronic active cruise control system is a good idea but flawed. Don't worry if the car you are considering has neither, but an auto gearbox and full leather upholstery are a must.
