WE LOOKED AT ALL THE 4X4S AVAILABLE AND FOUND THAT FOR RUNNING COSTS AS WELL AS THE DEAL TO BE HAD BY THE DEALER, THE MERCEDES CAME OUT BEST ALL ROUND.
AFTER DRIVING THE BMW IT IS TRUE TO SAY THAT THE BMW WAS BY FAR THE QUICKER CAR ON THE OPEN ROAD, BUT THEN INDEED WAS THE NEED TO FIND YET ANOTHER PETROL STATION.
THE FUEL USED BY THE MERCEDES IS NOT GREAT ON SHORT TRIPS BUT ON LONG DISTANCE IT WAS GREAT. LEG ROOM INSIDE FOR THE REAR PASSENGERS IS GOOD EQUIPMENT ON THE SPECIAL EDITION IS GREAT, IN FACT I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT ANY ONE LOOKING PURCHASING A 4X4 SHOULD LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE SPECIAL EDITION 270 CDI.
Having run the car for 12 months and covered 19000 miles I find the car very comfortable and a good asset to family live.
The running cost of the car have surprised me my first service bill that included changing the brakes has just come in at £1,230.
Purchased new 2002, no problems so far. I tow a caravan & find it ideal, would buy another
I mainly tow with this car and I cant fault it.
The engine is superb and cruises really well. Solo it's OK. It does roll in the bends but it's a 2.2 ton car let's be realistic the X5 has much harder suspension to stop that but the same spec adds up to 9k more.
Inside has been good - only one annoying squeak that comes and goes but it seems well put together and nothing has fallen off.
There is good legroom in the back for adults and access in and out is very good much better than a Disco. Price looked steep against the opposition with the Disco looking a bargain, but the new one has changed all that, 40k for an SE with extras a big jump in price.
