I have just sold my MG ZT after a great years driving and 20,000 business miles. I bought the 54 plate V6 Auto version for £6000 in February 2008 with 24k on the clock. At that point it was loosing about 1/2 lt of water a week; when I sold it, it was loosing 2 lts of water a week. But I think this is par for the course with this engine.
On the plus side, this is probably the most comfortable car I have owned since my Rover SD1 in the '80's. I didnt think it was that fast but it ate up the motorway miles in style and comfort. In the year I had it, as well as the business miles, I toured France twice; putting on 2K each time. No problem at all; just kept topping up the water.
I had the Auto version; this is slow even with the "S" button engaged. But like like James May said, its for wafting in.
At trade in, with about 40k on the clock and in reasonable to good order. I was offered £1500 against a Volvo C70, which I turned down. In the end I got £2400 against an RX-8. So you should be able to pick one up cheap.
Dont be put off by the engine problems when looking to buy this car, just make sure there is a full service history and get insurance for car breakdowns....and keep checking the water.
I am well impressed by this car iv only owned it for a breif period so far but plan a long relationship. Comfort, style, performance all come together nicely in perfect harmony. the only downsides i have come across is the inevitable replacement of the head-gasket but i am extreamly confident that now done it will continue to impress for years to come.
I've Owned this car for nearly 2 months and it is by far the best car I've ever owned. The acceleration is brilliant reaching60 in just over 8 seconds. The handling is also impressive with the 18 inch alloys with no real loss of comfort. I have joined the MG owners club an parts are not has hard to find as I first thought. I plan on keeping this car for a long long time....
I owned a silver 1.8T model, sadly it was not meant to be for us.
I loved the look and feel of the car and (when working) it was fantastic to drive. However I only owned it for 15 days due to a number of issues - the engine management light came on within 5 mins of pick-up and the car wouldn't accelerate. The dealer said it was an old fault code.
Then the clutch went after 3 days - the dealer replaced it, but the engine wouldn't idle properly and after a dealer service inspection, they told me the engine manifold and head gasket were suspect. I had my money back.
Such a shame though, as I really liked the car. Design faults and cost cutting let it down.
