Mitsubishi SpaceStar Classic. I bought the car new in 2003 and chose the 1.3 petrol classic model as my peference. Despite having read motoring correspondents reports on this car I decided to go with my own experience and buy this product. I have not been dissapointed. I still own the car and have not been persuaded to change it for another make or model. This year (2007) January, I drove from Suffolk (UK) to Algarve (Portugal) with my wife and a full cargo deck. I cruised through Europe at very respectable top speeds, returning above 43mpg, I have no interest in 0-60mph figures or being able to outcorner/handle a Lotus. We returned to the UK with the car packed to the gills and had no trouble with the car in any form. My motoring c.v:- Rally driving, circuit racing, rallycross, and autocross RAC registered and licenced. My wife has a Honda Jazz bought from new. We both prefer the Mitsu for comfort and driveability although she says she does not want to change the Jazz for another car. The Mitsubishi has not received a fair press/media cover during past years and is undervalued in price and accreditation. I recommend the SpaceStar with confidence.
I LOVE THIS CAR!! I think it is comfortable and reliable, maybe the only down side i have found is that it doesn't take corners very well, apart from that i am very glad i chose this car. Perfect for the dog and i like a responsive car that goes when i put my foot down............this does just that. Interior is full of hideaways for your belongings and even a slide cover to cover up your stereo when your parking the car in public places. A very sensible car (but as i said the acceleration is fab) so although it's sensible .....it's most definitely not a boring drive.
I have owned this car for the past 3 1/2 years (53 plate and 96,000 miles). It has handled large loads without problems. The boot space is roomy enough for most loads and I was surprised as to how much I could fit it. Cornering is a bit spongy but the MPG is very good for the age of the vehicle and I do 22,000+ miles per year in it. The low tax is also very useful (class B £115/year currently). Mitsubishi charge a very high price for servicing but I have found cheaper alternatives, at a third of the price, without problems. The biggest problem is the limp home mode of the ECU as it completely clears the ECU of previous faults. If you get into problems with the ECU, the breakdown people are unable to retrieve the fault codes as the ECU resets itself when the ignition is turned off and on again.
For the price I paid this is a bargain car. It does not have very good reviews, but I think it is a great car. If you can find a low milage well looked after model for a good price I would recomend you give it serious consideration. Lots of room in the back for 2 large adults.
An underated car.
