The doors in the s door version are a bit big, but there is very nice legroom for passengers and there is also good lugguage space.
Most of the reviews I have read have been about the Nissan Almera SXE 112bhp. I own the Nissan 136bhp, which I find has great acceleration, especially in second and third gears. The sat-nav is fantastic.
It can cruise all day on the motorway and the amount of extras you get thown in is, I believe, better than average. Reliability is very good. The only thing missing is the prestige. It is very comfortable to drive and road-holding is impressive.
I have had the car new from April 2000. We had the previous model Almera and tried the seats in the new model, they were such an improvement that we decided to buy the car immediately.
The 1.8 engine coupled with the 4 speed autogearbox and overdrive is an excellent smooth combination. 60mph is achieved at 2,500 rpm so the engine is not stressed, and it has never exceeded 3,000 rpm in top overdrive ever. I never got less than 38 mpg on normal driving, and go up to 45 mpg on "long runs".
The car has been totally 100% reliable, and has only been in to the dealer for annual services. Both MOT's were passed with no problems. The front tyres lasted for 36,000 miles, and the rear tyres were replaced at 54,000 miles.
The dealer advises that the front brake pads are less than 30% worn at 54,000 miles, so I expect to exceed 100,000 miles before changing the brake pads. The engine uses no oil whatsoever between 9,000 mile service intervals.
The engine is very quiet both inside and outside the car, so much so that in town traffic I have to be careful with cyclists that they do not pull out in front of me becuase they cannot hear the engine and do not know that I am there.
At night the headlights are excellent, I have the twin halogen headlight system.
The car is very economical. I drive to Spain every year and it cruises like a dream on the motorways.
I have had a few teething problems with different bits though. Sat-nav is perfect.
