First, here are the disadvantages to the 106. It has a very noisy engine, a long gearshift pattern, poor interior space both in the front and in the back, the gearbox eats itself, and there's far too short a gear ratio in first.
Also, it has squeeky brakes (even after being changed), a small fuel tank, it needs a lot of oil changes, it starts on three cylinders in any weather conditions, and the clutch commits suicide at the worst possible moment.
However, it has good boot space, returns good fuel economy, has decent bodypaint work, suspension and seats, and it has an immobiliser.
I love my little 106 I have owned it just over a year now.
Touch wood it has never let me down.
This car is really fun to drive, its really nippy and can easily beat VW's, BMW's, Audi's etc at the lights.
You can take corners at speed with no problems.
I find the interior slightly boring and out of date but it does its job!
Iv had a few bodywork issues at the MOT stage but nothing major..... yet!!!
Overall a great little car.. I love it!
I really do love my car a lot, but thats pretty much only because its my first car and that means freedom! However, its not been great to own. It has cost me at least twice its price (i bought it 2nd hand for £2500, its an R-reg) in repairs, namely exhaust, brakes, and suspension. It leaks when it rains, really annoying! Oh, and its REALLY easy to break into, 3 times in a year. To top it all off, someone has just reversed into the side of it at about 5 mph and the whole thing is crushed to pieces, i dread to think what would happen to it in a big crash!
This all sounds terrible, and I dare say some of this may be my fault, I do drive it a little hard. It has been good on fuel consumption, and its not too bad to drive. If you are anything above 5'10 in height, its cramped. I'm sure this is a great car, just got a dud.
I owned a 2001 106 Zest 2 diesel for three years until november 2005. It was cheap and very basic. It never felt very well put together and was a bit tatty, but I expected that anyway. In the first 18 months it was reliable and cheap to own and run.
Then the problems started. In less then 18 months it had needed a new radiator, the airbag light constantly showed on the dashboard, it needed new spark plugs, went through several new tyres and for a low-mileage car needed a complete new exhaust system. Also, the driver's seat started to wobble and shake and became uncomfortable.
I felt the car was a bit of a disaster and it ended up costing me loads of money in repairs. I will never buy another Peugeot.
