Ive driven this Y-reg 106 from when my family purchased it new. I now own it and its been fantastic! Apart from a faulty airbag warning light, its not had any problems which is quite something since it now has done 93000 miles. Running costs are low compared to other cars but ultimately I think its fantastic to drive. It is unrefined but what do you expect for a car that cost £6000 to buy? I'll miss it once I part-ex it but im looking forward to something more comfortable and with a little more space. Overall though, a great little car.
On the positive side, it's nice to have five doors, and the power steering feels just right. The car feels larger in the interior than it presents itself from the exterior. The brakes are good, even without ABS, and there's decent boot space - with rear seats down, further space can be provided.
However, the engine is loud - there's inadequate sound insulation in the engine bay. The suspension is also quite loud, and radio reception is worse compared to other cars. There's little space in the rear seats, and a rattly gearbox. The car is down on low-rev torque, even though it's a diesel, and power comes in a lump at the very end of the rev range where I never drive it.
I owned one of these great little cars for about 15 months. I could not fault it in any way. When I bought it it had done 138000 miles but it had full service history and was in good condition. I only paid £650 for it and in the time I had the car all I done to it was replace the front exhaust downpipe which cost a mere £27 and also a 12000 mile service with an MOT which was £99. The car was reliable ,economical, fun to drive and most of all cheap to run. My only mistake was trading it in for a Mercedes A140!
I don't like the small engine, long gear changes, short wheelbase, and the fact that it's unstable at higher speeds. It also has a weak handbrake, and feels too small.
However, the interior design is smart, and it's nimble at low speeds. It's also got decent suspension.
