This is my second 307, the first one being an SW 2.0HDi SE. The hatchback XSi 1.6 HDi is far more zippy to drive and far more economical. The interior is very well laid out and fits my 23 stone 6 foot frame very nicely.
It avereges 54 mpg looks nice and I can't fault it for comfort and running costs main dealer servicing is very expensive and a complete rip off and would do it myself if it wasn't for the waranty. The car cost £11,000 and was seven months old when I bought it. I found the dealer very good.
Pros:
Aesthetically pleasing design Roomy Quiet (when at low speeds) Stylish Comfortable Practicality Price - a lot of car for the money Hard-wearing interior
Cons:
Slow (at the lower end of the scale - it livens up after 50mph) Poor reliability (referring to minor electrical glitches and gremlins - NOT major mechanical issues) Abysmal dealer/service performance - shoddy service on car, returned dirty, poor condition of courtesy cars, bad service personel attitude etc. High running costs Mediocre drive (at best) Too many rattles Eats tyres
Would I recommend it? Two years ago, yes - now, sorry Peugeot, no.
My wife has a problem with her back, this car is one of the very few that she has been able to drive without any pain the adjustments are great and I feel that this must be of some importance especially with women.
The car itself feels safe on the road and rides high, which helps to make you feel secure. I did not notice a lot of road noise, I feel that the critism could be said for many cars if you are unlucky then so be it, every car has its faults, but I feel that it certainly has a lot of good points.
I bought mine secondhand so don't really know if the following bugbears are indicative of a new Peugeot 307:
1) the gearbox whines 2) there's a flat spot in second gear 3) it has poor rear visibility when parking due to chunky columns 4) the nature of the front wipers when in operation leaves a line of dirt and debris smeared in the centre of the windscreen 5) fuel economy is not good, bearing in mind my previous car (a 1.8-litre Mondeo) 6) on all 307s, the front wings seemd to be out of line with car - do not match up to front doors
Good points:
1) the cabin equipment is excellent - I love the LCD display 2) there are airbags aplenty - must be good! 3) an air-conditioned glovebox - I have not used it yet but it will be handy 4) it's a good solid car 5) it feels a safe drive and it handles quite well
