I wrote a review at 4000miles and now updating it after 47000 miles. Car is 2 yrs 8 months old, has had numerous balljoints fitted to front offside and new steering pump/pipes etc, needs new front discs, clutch is starting to slip, auto headlamps erratic, body dents easily and paint seems soft and prone to scratching. Car ride and comfort is excellent, but I'm fed up seeing the dealer.
I Purchased this car after owning a Citroen C5 for 18 months. Before I had the Citroen I owned an MG ZS180,The Citroen was big quiet, comfy and economical. The 407 was a perfect choice as the Handling was nearer the balance of my MG and the refinement and fuel economy was better than my C5.
I chose a petrol model as it was cheaper to buy than the diesel,Only requires servicing every 2 years/20k mile(Diesel 1 year/15k miles!)and felt quicker. I get around 38mpg which is better than I got from the diesel I test drove.
I have had a couple of small reliability issues,These are as follows 1:Faulty ABS/ESP sensor 2:Lower ball joint causing MOT failure 3:Central radio/Comp display going dim 4:Knock from rear suspension over small bumps 5:Subtle Creak from rear of the car. The first 3 faults were all repaired under warranty and the rear suspension knock was caused by the handbrake cable, The creak I still can't find the cause.
Overall I think this is the best all round car I have ever had,Great Handling,Spacious,Quiet,Feels solidly built,Lots of gadgets,Looks great(In Iron Gray!)and my car feels surprisingly quick. I am thinking of buying an SW for my wife.
Update to review submitted on 11/3/2007. Engine intermittent misfiring continued for another year before becoming intolerable again. Peugeot UK unable to resolve it despite (eventually) having the car back for several weeks and covering 1000+ miles testing it. Clutch had to be replaced whilst they had it - at about 34k miles the first car that I have had in 30+ years that needed a new clutch - so in my opinion caused by strain put on the transmission by the misfiring. A week after I got it back from them the problem resumed. Peugeot deny there is a problem with this engine and the FAP system. - posts on this site suggest otherwise. I chose this model because of its low CO2 emissions -I now realise that this is because it was off the road so often! In fairness to Peugeot UK and the dealer I always was given a courtesy car - various models/engines - all of which were reliable.
Update from my notes on 15/08/2008... Now 3 years 8 months into it's life. 44,000 miles. New ABS/ESP sensor needed and, a replacement power steering pump and connecting hose. Hopefully the last of my woes with this car.
