I bought my 2001 Laguna Sports Tourer at 1 year old. It's a piece of junk!
I've had two new window motors in the passenger side and the driver's side packed in exactly one week after the extended warranty expired. The window now falls open with road vibration. It will take £200 to fix, so I've jammed it shut with a rubber wedge until we can afford to fix it.
I've replaced the track rod ends but it's still very hard on tyres and the nearside tyre sensor keeps failing. The front discs had to be replaced at 10,000Km. One keycard keeps failing.
The instruments suddenly changed to kilometres without warning - this is a known fault that takes £300 to fix, so we'll just live with it, thanks. The coating on the exterior door handles is peeling off. The whole car rattles and clanks like the ghost of Jacob Marley.
The scuttle drains are blocked and water collects in them when it rains. I need a special tool to remove the fastenings - guess what, I can't get hold of one.
The mountings for both rear seats sheared off after a few weeks because they are made of cheap plastic. If you have boisterous kids, bear this in mind.
Two weeks after I bought the car, there was an article in the local press that said the Laguna is the fastest-depreciating car in UK and I can't afford to replace it since it needs so much work to get it into a sellable condition. Lucky white heather anyone?
Had my Laguna II (02'52), 1.9dci Tourer 120bhp for 2.5yrs. It is without doubt the poorest car I have ever driven. There is always something going wrong with it or needing replacing. Front end is so heavy it eats through tyres at a rate of a pair every 12 weeks. I once bought Avon's for the front pair, they lasted 5 weeks!! before bald. My tyre pressure sensors are telling me to check pressure's when there is nothing wrong, light bulbs are regularly changed and when they are the computer tells me they haven't been! My screen mists up because something is loose behind the dashboard-passenger side is fine though. Renault dealer tells me they will charge £250+VAT to take the dashboard off JUST to have a look! Last year I had problems with my fuel injectors. Dealer wanted £325 for a new one and keep the old one too. Watch out for that because they are supposed to give you a £70 rebate on your old one, Renault (France) take them back and recomission them back into service. Dealers don't mention this rebate. My electric windows are also playing up. "RenaultForums" are a great source of info on these cars-there are many, many problems with these cars. Renault Dealers are a Joke! They don't care about you or your car and charge like wounded buffaloes for the smallest of repairs let alone the big stuff. I regretted buying this car almost as soon as I got it home-and I haven't stopped paying for it since.(Dec 2007).
The car is a 1.6 16v sport tourer laguna 11, 51 plate. I bought the car second hand, three and a half years old and had done 24,000 miles. It had had one MOT. The car is now six years old and done about 54,000, In the two and a half years i have owned it it has cost me a fortune in repairs. I have had to replace two tyre valves. the fault is still there and reanult cannot seem to sort it out. so i now just ignore the thing. The front electric window stopped working due to the cable snapping.
The sun roof switch is faulty and the panel jams open.
The dash display packed in leaving me without speedo, petrol gauge etc...
I have had to replace the rear disks.
The front stearing rods had excessive play on my first mot, which i did not expect from a car with approximately 30,000 on the clock at that point and were replaced.
Internal lights started staying on which renault could not fix. Luckily I found an article on line at renault forums which explained it was due to a faulty switch in the card reader which i repaired. The card micro switches broke free of their solder on my cards so could not lock car. The starter motor has been replaced. The car stalls for no reason as you pull up to junctions etc. the fault cannot be found. Have just replaced two coils and one went previously. Catalytic converter broke. I find the drive ok, the car is smooth and travels smoothly on long journeys, despite being slightly underpowered for hills.
I have had this car, a 2001 51 plate, for just over a year. In August it cost me £850 at an independent garage to get it through its MOT (needed rear discs and pads, a track rod arm, two ball joints, work on the handbrake, a couple of other things plus the labour charge). This week it will cost at least another £500 as the intercooler failed the other day, bringing up oil and then burning it. I realise the car is now getting on a bit, but has only done 65,000 miles, which is next to nothing for a diesel. I was attracted to the Laguna because my parents had an old shape (97 P-reg) one from new and never had any problems with it. I will not be buying another Renault and would advise anyone else to look at other makes unless they plan to take out a second mortgage.
