I bought this car in November 04 brand new and it is the worst car we have ever owned.
It was only one month old when the roof had to be repainted. Then followed the failures of various starters, the door and pressure switch, sensors, two new camshaft pulley dephasers, two new timing belts, windscreen wiper motor, air condition pressure switch replaced, split rubber round drivers door, the brakes screamed at us not only when braking but in low speed, for nearly three years before Renault said that had a shim kit for the brakes but we need edto pay for new brakes because the others were 75% worn! It was no wonder, as they had been rubbing all that time!
The handbrake sometimes wouldn't release and we had to drive for a while with it on. The car shuddered when idle. The engine hesitated for first half hour. We had to keep replacing the fuse for the rear wiper.
But the final straw was when the bolts on the steering had to be replaced. It was time for it to go before the warranty finished.
On the plus side, the fuel economy was good and interior layout was practical.
I have this car for two years. The fuel costs are quite low and I get over 60mpg. However, this is all that is good with it.
In two years I have suffered from a faulty alarm (in the bonnet) which had to be fixed twice. The drivers window also failed. Recently the turbo failed and cost £1100 to replace under warranty. Less than a week after this the ERV valves failed. I have spent more time getting this fixed than anyother car.
It has been an absolute nightmare - I'll never buy another Renault again.
98,000 miles in 2 years! No major problems to report, however, since driving this car I've had a dull back pain. I can't really blame the seats, but i did a similar amount of miles in my previous MG ZS and had no problem!
It handles like a boat.... but then I'd got used to the MG handling which I loved.
I consistently got around 45mpg and hardly ever drove it in a frugal way! The engine performs very well, with plenty of torque. I loved to blow away the odd boy racer from a set of traffic lights in the 'Old Mans Car'. Unfortunately, I'd reach any corner and the body roll would have me pumping on the brakes.... which are.... fantastic. I've never known a car stop like this.... but takes a little getting used too!
Problems I've had.... I dislodge part of the wheel arch driving through a big puddle - (A frequent problem I was told). Bulbs have to be changed by a renault garage.
The key card is the worst thing about it. The manual key works loose and falls out. Its too big to put in your wallet, too awkward to put with your other keys and too flimsy to just leave in a pocket.
Good bits.... It does have a nice CD player with good sound quality, the aircon is very effective and the space inside is great.
I took it to get some new tyres after only 16,000 miles (on Pirelli p600's) to learn that all Renaults really eat through tyres.
I got this car as a company car in June 2006, and have travelled 26,000 miles so far. I got the car for its praticality as I've got three children. The space is poor in the back for 2 booster seats and a third child.
Before this I had a vectra and was disappointed in the Vectra's use of oil (1 litre every 1000 miles) which Vauxhall said was acceptable and problems with the steering. I hoped the Renault would be more reliable.
So far the Renault is ok to drive, but underpowered when loaded. There is little feeling to the steering. The biggest issue i find is the large blindspots when entering motorways or at junctions. Visibilty is poor over your shoulder.
I have had a problem with the automatic headlights. When starting up the headlights come on, but the dashboard does not light up. This is a software problem Renault are aware of, but has not come through. I have been reporting this since January when the car had its first service. Appartently the new Clio has the same problem. Renault's advice is to turn off the engine and start up again - typical IT response!!
Overall the car is just ok. Its alright at most things, but no world beater, and I find myself missing the Vectra on long motorway journeys.
