i have now owned this car from sep 08. cost me 6K , with 8K miles. the car is superb, came with a one year unlimited mileage warranty. then went in for some niggles and the dealer tried to charge me! also, the service folks dont seem very keen on customer care or satisfaction, but well, how frequently do you see them? maybe they prefer the no questions asking mercedes folks. car is a cracker, gives me about 65 MPG, no exxageration at all. very smooth, but the engine can be heard at idle, once you get rolling, you dont hear anything !
I have just returned from Italy having rented a forfour-passion 1300 cc. WOW!!! The car had been abused by several previous renters of ITALY BY CAR, accessed thru EASY CAR.COM (yes, the same as easy jet.com!!). Even so, clanky as it was, the performance was stunning, the economy, equally so, and I am a tall feller, so when I saw it, I wondered if I was going to fit inside...NO PROBS snug as a bug in a rug. This little madam has got my adoration for life.
After driving a toyota starlet and a fiat punto for years . and only having my forfour pulse for a short time . IM IN HEAVEN it handles well on all roads. the acceleration is fantastic.its funky chunky style is brill. she definately turns heads.. her name is mimi .she,s fantastic on the purse strings she is defintely NOT a petrolholic. i will be heart broken when we have to part company. hopefully i will be to old to drive when that time comes. EVERY HOUSE should have one
I have owned this car for 3 months now, and I have a sort of love-hate relationship with it, the semi-auto box took some getting used to as it could be smoother, but in manual, it's not too bad and fairly quick. The cabin is rather low-rent, but well optioned.
There is a strange problem in that when the car is hot, it will not make reverse gear only when stationary on a right-hand camber?
Mercedes looked at it TWICE before deciding that the fault lay in the reverse light switch , and then demanded £240 to fit it! a local garage charged me £40 labour to fit the £9 component.
The problem I'm afraid to state still remains, so now it's off to an independant gearbox specialist. I think Mercedes service and charges leave a lot to be desired, or as Frank Butcher would say, 'they are avin a right larf'
Overall , the Smart is an amusing little vehicle to drive, cheap to run, and it's quite attractive to look at, but I would not a buy another one.
P.S. if anyone out there has any suggestions on solving my reversing problem, I'm all ears !
