I test drove the Auris and as a family car it is superb, much better than the Golf I test drove last week. I could set the driving position exactly as I wanted, as could my wife and we are totally different. The Auris will never be a hot hatch, but then its not sold in that bracket. Toyota make safe, reliable cars, perfect for families
I had the chance to go to the Toyota Auris launch in Malta, and i was really impressed with the design and also with what Toyota is pratically aiming for. In general on the road its a really good car, although it might not deliver that much amount of fun such as the main competitors however i still recommend this car. I have a strong feeling this car would stand the test of time. I would personally choose the TR / T3 Model with a 2.0 D4D engine, forget the lower powered petrol / diesel engines, just spend some more to gor a 2.0 D4D Engine or 1.6 VVT-i Engine. I prefer the diesel one however. Goodluck for all those who bought one..i hope it will give you years and years of good service!
The car looks quite big inside, though it is not that long. Handbrake was hard and awkard to operate. The dials were nice.
In multimode transmission (using paddles behind steering), was quite fun to do it. However, fully automatic mode was not that smooth. In speed upto 30 mph, the car jerks very slightly while upshifting automatically. However it does not happen in higher speed. I observed that it usually up shifts the gear at 2000-3000 RPM range. During comfortable cruise speed, rev needle remained between 2000+ mostly and sometimes touching 3000 RPM mark. The AC inside was good. Being an automatic, the car creeps forward in very slow speed without using accelerator but on an upward slope, it creeps backward untill I pressed little bit on accelerator! However, on an upward slope, the car slides backward instead of moving forward!
The driver's seat was height adjustable. When it moves for height, it also slides forward slightly. It was possible to only slide horizontally using normal hook under the seat. The entry was via keyless type. The engine start/stop button is as per with modern trends.
The visibility in front was excellent (though I had to judge where bonnet ended - but that's the case with nearly all cars now). The car looked quite wide to me though it was not that wide in reality. Judging clearence in front at very tight space demands dexterity. I foresee that parking in a tight spot would require some skills. Overall, a nice car but quite pricey.
Based on the solid reputation of small Toyotas, I decided to take the company's latest offering out for a test drive to see what it was like. First, the seating adjustment is decidely awkward - I found it impossible to get the backrest to an ideal angle for me. The car seems fairly spacious in the front and rear, though the boot could do with being a bit bigger.
The keyless ignition system on the T-Spirit model works OK, though it's no different from other manufacturers systems. Driving the car is not particularly fun. The steering is dull, and takes a bit of getting used to. The handling is far from good, although it does feel solid and well put together.
The gearbox seems set too high up for my own personal liking, and the handbrake is a joke - if it isn't broken. The 2.0 D4-D engine is quite noisy, and the gearing is pretty poor, too. The car cannot cope with fourth gear at 30mph - the last car I drove that had this kind of problem only had four gears, and was built back in 1991! The performance is also surprisingly poor considering it has 130bhp.
Basically, I wouldn't recommend the Auris. Even if all you want is a comfortable, reliable car, there are better, cheaper cars on the market. I was sadly disappointed by just how average this car is in so many key areas.
