Further to my previous review, where I had put a lowly 120,000 miles on my Avensis without problems, I'm now up to just under 170,000 miles and, except for scheduled replacement of things like the cam belt, the only time the car hasn't started was when the starter motor went at around 150,000 miles. I replaced the heater fan motor myself as it gave up the ghost (£30 on ebay) and... that's it!
Just had it MOT'd and serviced - straight through the MOT. I would love to replace my Avensis with something newer and shinier but this car simply won't quit.
I have a 1998 S Reg 1.8 GS 5 Door Hatch, since owning this car for just over the last year I have found it to be very reliable and everything within the car works perfectly. It's done 110k miles, has been regulary service by prior owners as well as myself (I use a good garage). I am amazed at the fuel economy as getting 38mpg around town and get about 45mpg on a run. I have had 1.6's before that have done far less miles than that. The Toyota is a very comfortable car to drive daily as well as on longer trips. Ok, it's not the most inspiring car to drive, but I have seen off a few boy racers as they always think "grandad car". I am very happy with the car and will keep for a good many years. I certainly recommend it to other people as a descent 2nd hand buy.
Bought my 01 just over 3 yrs ago, has been mainly a very good car ave. over 40mpg.HOWEVER local dealer made a mess of fixing rear o/s brake drum which was overheating, and charged me £70 per hour. I now go to a local garage which has been fine and only charge £30 per hour. The most comfortable car I have driven, and quiet except for tyre noise. The new Avensis is not so comfortable and seems to have a lot of faults so shall hang on to present car for some time yet - only 34,000 miles so far.
Had car from new, August 1999. Now has 107,000 miles, and other than regular servicing, have only had to replace tyres at 40,000 mile intervals, plus one set of oil cooler pipes at 104,000. Fantastic car. Will run it till it decides it has had enough.

Had this car for 90k from new. A 56 plate. In over 2,000,000 miles driven this one has broken down the most of any car I have had. DO NOT get a 2.0…
