I purchased a 2008 model just 2 weeks ago and dressed it up with a grill bar and side steps. The accessories along with the red metallic colour makes the vehicle very attractive. I am really enjoying the vehicle and this is my 3rd Rav 4 (I also owned 1st and 2nd generation models). The ride is a tad bumpy on bumpy roads but the handling around mountain corners is very good, as there is no body roll and it feels like a car and not a high SUV. I like the cabin appointments and the 6 speaker stereo system sounds good. The safety kit with 9 air bags etc. is excellent. It appears that Toyota has fixed the back door to open wide on the 2008 model. The Rav 4 has an excellent reputation in Jamaica and strong resale value. I am looking forward to continued driving pleasure and limited maintenance costs over the next couple of years as this brand has a good repuation for low mainteance. All in all the car is well built and I would recommend it as a good buy.
I have had my RAV4 now for about two weeks and cannot really fault it.
It seems that not many petrol engines are sold and I guess that the reason is that they do have a better write-up than the diesel ones.
Personally, I don't really do much mileage, so the extra costs of the diesel was not an option, although I did drive the T180 and really liked it.
As for the petrol, I don't find the engine more noisy than the diesel - to be honest I find it in the lower revs actually quieter. The fuel consumption is obviously greater on the petrol, the computer reckons that we get about 30.8mpg out of it.
I don't think that this is realistc, as I should get about 300 miles out of my tank and averaged about 260-270.
Other than that the RAV4 has a comfy ride, has loads of space and you can get three child seats in it because you can disable the front airbag.
However, I have read that a certain VIN range had issues with airbag deployment whilst on the Euro NCAP test. So if you do get a RAV4, check out the report and make sure your car does not fall into that catagory. I wish I had checked mine as my RAV4 is a pre-modification car and Toyota doesn't seem to be issuing any recalls on this problem.
Dont let that scare you off though as the car is fab.
I have just had this car for just coming up to a month and I have to say it's far better than I ever expected.
Toyota as a dealer are excellent. My wife bought a Aygo last year and from walking into the dealer to today the car, service plan and just after sale service has been excellent. To be honest that's what encouraged me to walk into the Toyota dealer and test drive the Rav4.
As for the car itself, the ride is refined with plenty of power when you put your foot down to overtake. In cabin is excellent, my collegue at work has a Landrover which has not a totch on the Rav4 (I think he's thinking of trading in already for a Rav!). The boot space is more than enough without taking over. Finaly the overall build and quality for it's class is just the best value for money.
Everytime I look at it it puts a smile on my face and everytime I drive it I don't regret buying it.
GET ONE!
Probably the best car I have ever owned.
I tow a caravan and get 25-30mpg whilst towing and on its own I get 48-50mpg on the motorway at a steady 70mph.
The car is comforable and very quiet. The on road drive is excellent and road holding, cornering and general driving first class.
I have owned the car since June 2007 and it has done 4000miles of trouble free motoring. The only thing I miss is cruise control, my last car was a Jeep, and it had many more gizmos, including cruise control.
