i work for a car hire company which has a huge variety of cars on its fleet, I have driven most popular models of car and the vectra (especially in cdti 150 trim) is an outstanding car. More comfortable than a mondeo and much more reliable than a vw passsat.
As a company car driver I do a lot of miles, around 40,000 a year probably more, the car has been a never ending source of problems from new, I was given the car June 2004 from the outset there was a power problem, which couldnt be fixed, because the fault computer was not logging it, eventually fixed by a software upgrade, the service computer did not work and could not be fixed by 2 main agents and was finaly fixed at 82000 miles by a non franchised dealer, it appears to need new brake pads and discs at every service, new wiper linkages under warrenty, new throttle body, 2 exhaust pressure sensors, new steering rack at around 88,000 miles under warrenty, new engine loom because there was a bad contact at one of the injectors, I estimate 35 days off the road not including services, I am almost scarred to drive this car as the reliability is so poor. Bad driving?, we have 2 of these and they are similar in reliability, and as it happens I talked to another Vectra driver in a garage, she has the same problem with brakes that our 2 cars have. I wouldnt buy another Vauxhall, and for a private owner buying secondhand, I recon they would be a major financial burden, but when it works it is good to drive. Its pretty light on tyres too.
Changing to Vauxhall was a shot in the dark for me, having been a Japanese-car fanatic for over 30 years. I like the car's economy and performance, but there are one or two niggles which detract from total satisfaction. A disconcerting "clunk", under the bonnet, on the driver's side has not yet been resolved by my dealer, the hand-brake has slipped a couple of times, and the tailgate locking mechanism has a will of its own! A shame as, otherwise, I like the car a lot.
I bought this car with 3000 miles for £14k last year at 1 year old. I have now covered 32000 miules with no problems at all. It is a great work horse and is averaging 42 MPG. This is done with a lot of short journeys as I am a rep and run my own car. The digital radio is superb and I am very impressed with it overall. My main niggle is the wheel size which makes tyres difficult to get and at £100 a time not cheap! I will be changing it next October but I have no idea what to get to replace such a well built car. This by the way from a man who has never liked Vauxhall!
