    My car

Some bad colours available in my opinion, I’ve a dark blue golf which I think looks good. The 1400cc engine is a little under powered for the weight of the car, but it is cheap to insure and tax.

When I brought the car it had done 55k now on 65k with no troubles.

I'm surprised how cheap the fitted mats from the main dealer where, only £17.

So far, very pleased with it.

    My car

This car is promoted by VW as being a GTI. It's nothing of the sort. What you get is a car that goes well in a straight line and falls to pieces when you show it a corner.

It has fantastic build quality and reeks of class. But it just does not handle, added to which the steering is poor, giving you very little clue as to where you're pointing it.

It gives you fantastic mpg, aided by the fact that as it's such a poor-handling car, you'll never want to drive it too hard anyway. It's a car that is brilliant if you drive it at 6/7 tenths - any more and you'll end up understeering into the scenery.

I've liked the car in the 3 years I've owned it, but I can't wait to get into something that gives you some driving satisfaction. As long as you don't expect a GTi, you won't be disappointed.

    My car

I have a 2002 GT TDI 130PD, which I traded in an Audi A4 110TDi for. I am totally converted to diesels due to their superior performane over their petrol siblings.

Reprogramming the engine management has upped the power to 155Hp with over 280 Lb/Ft torque and this thing absolutely flies, the in-gear acceleration is fantastic and you can cruise down the motorway from 50mph+ in 6th gear, one trip down the autobahn I passed 130 and was still accelerating before backing off!

Being a five-door it is very practical and, although you are surrounded by black everything, the interior is a nice place to be with quality switchgear and fittings. The boot too deserves a mention because it has not yet let us down no matter what we have tried to fit in.

Pulman VW in Durham has an excellent customer service and I think that makes all the difference with these cars, find a good dealer and stick with them.

I would definitely buy another VAG diesel again, perhaps the Seat Leon or Skoda Octavia because you get just that little bit more for your money but with VW mechanicals underneath.

    Problems...

The driver's computer display should be red on a black background but mine has a redish background, which really stood out at night - this was replaced under warranty. The rear cupholder mechanism jammed.

So all in all I feel that the VW Golf deserves its reputation for quality and reliability. If you haven't driven a modern diesel then try one, you will be amazed.

    My car

When I first got the Golf it was everything I wanted; practial, stylish and pretty quick. However, having run it for two years it's been in the garage five times with repeated engine and oil problems, and each time the dealers have been next to useless. I wouldn't buy another VW, and I certainly wouldn't ever buy a Golf GTI.
